What's the difference between progressive Evangelicals like Rob Bell, Shane Claiborne, and Brian McLaren, and? by Citizen of the Cosmos Q: standard Mainline Protestants?

A: Their doctrine and theology is a little iffy. For instance, Rob Bell has a new book that emphasizes God's love but minimizes his holiness. A great deal is to help fix problems the church has, usually in compassion and social justice, but some of the solutions that they propose can be worse than the problems that they try to fix.

Rob Bell claims he is not a Universalist, but does he promote universalist theology? by Regando-Adano Q: Is his book LOVE WINS the first of his works promulgating a universalist message OR has that them always been in his work? Or do you disagree with that entire premise?

A: I don't have the book. I disagree with the Universalist theology. Romans 10:9 John 3:16

A: I have no idea what you're talking about, so I can't be sure, but "Hoppipolla" is Sigur Ros' most famous and played song. It's often used in movie trailers and movies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EyI4p0yjDQ

How do you feel about Rob Bell? by Chandler Q: How do you feel about Rob Bell and his teachings? About his nooma videos? Books he has written? He seems to get a lot of praise for the things he does as well as a lot of ridicule.

A: Rob Bell Tolls Off-Key On The Bible There have been many requests for critique of the false teachings of Rob Bell, a pastor of Emergence Christianity. And for some time now people have been contacting their pastors and teachers to put together some of Bell's teachings in a kind of nutshell for easier reference. Time to do so has been hard to come by but here is a small veiw finder installment in what I pray will be a breif overview toward that direction. We shoud begin with the most important area concerning the view of the Bible held by pastor of Emergence Christianity Rob Bell. People I’ve talked with who have known Bell and/or have sat under his teaching tell me that at one time he was actually quite sound as an expositor of Scripture; but now it’s clear that, at best, Bell is much closer to nebulous neo-orthodoxy. As one who used to hear Bell back in his Calvary Church days told me recently; think MacArthur. However, after Bell and his wife read A New Kind of Christian by Brian McLaren, as you will see below like most in the Emergent Church, Bell has rejected "Sola Scriptura". This is an irrefutable fact. While making the rounds promoting his book Velvet Elvis: Repainting The Christian Faith (VE) Bell told BeliefNet.com: The Bible itself, he writes, is a book that constantly must be wrestled with and re-interpreted. He dismisses claims that “Scripture alone” will answer all questions. Bible interpretation is colored by historical context, the reader’s bias and current realities, he says. The more you study the Bible, the more questions it raises. “It is not possible to simply do what the Bible says,” Bell writes. Then in VE, after laying out essentially a neo-orthodox understanding of some of the Biblical writers, Bell specifically says: This is part of the problem with continually insisting that one of the absolutes of the Christian faith must be a belief that “Scripture alone” is our guide. It sounds nice but it is not true… When people say that all we need is the Bible, it is simply not true. (067, 068) In the Christianity Today article The Emergent Mystique we find out that Bell is essentially another McLaren disciple. CT has now put it into archive, and one must register to read it, so the version I’m referencing comes from Brian McLaren’s own website complete with his comments. Also the following material is condensed from my own article Seeing Bell in a New Light. Please keep in mind here that Bell happens to be the pastor that writer Andy Crouch chose to use as he opens his article on the Emergent Church. Crouch tells us: The Bells started questioning their assumptions about the Bible itself–discovering the Bible as a human product,” as Rob puts it, rather than the product of divine fiat. “The Bible is still in the center for us,” Rob says, “but it’s a different kind of center. We want to embrace mystery, rather than conquer it.” “I grew up thinking that we’ve figured out the Bible,” Kristen says, “that we knew what it means. Now I have no idea what most of it means. And yet I feel like life is big again–like life used to be black and white, and now it’s in color…” The Bells, who flourished at evangelical institutions from Wheaton to Fuller Theological Seminary to Grand Rapids’s Calvary Church before starting Mars Hill,…[felt] that very world, as the Bells tell it, became constricting–in Kristen’s phrase, “black and white…” And how did the Bells find their way out of the black-and-white world where they had been so successful and so dissatisfied? “Our lifeboat,” Kristen says, “was A New Kind of Christian.” The New Postmodern Cult Of A PostLiberalism So we start here because without this anchor of sola Scriptura Rob Bell’s neo-orthodoxy (being quite lenient) has now led him into a “repainted” [i.e. redefined] liberalism. And you need to understand that his embracing of mystery is Emergent-speak for the practice of Contemplative Spirituality Mysticism (CSM). Bell’s highly subjective and very wrong view of the Bible would be along the lines that the text of Scripture itself is not necessarily inspired; but rather, as the Holy Spirit inspires a particular passage to a particular person, it then comes to life and then becomes the Word of God. We would then breathe it in, so to speak, living it out but in a subjective i.e. existential personal experience. This heterodox position sees the Bible as “a human product” and in fact denies the perspicuity and verbal plenary inspiration of the text of Holy Scripture. However the Bible does indeed claim to be completely inspired of God in and of itself (e.g. 2 Timothy 3:16). But now you know the underlying reason why Emerging Church leaders like Rob Bell, with their hollow shell of Christianity make studying the texts of Holy Scripture far more difficult than it needs to be. In his article Postmodern Liberalism: Repainting a Non-Christian Faith (I) A Christian Critique of Rob Bell’s Velvet Elvis pastor-teac

What is the issue with the pastor Rob Bell? by Jordan V Q: I really like the pastor named Rob Bell. His NOOMA videos have always stirred something inside and me and have greatly moved me.But after doing some research on him, I've found that a lot of people online, even other pastors, find much at fault with him, and going so far to call him a heretic. I'm just curious and want to know why I'm out of the loop. Why is Rob Bell criticized so much by others and what did he say/do to receive said critique?

A: You have no problem with Rob Bell recommending that readers of Velvet Elvis take three months and read a book by Ken Wilber? How in Holy Scripture can you defend such a thing? Wilber is an occultic New Ager who is teaching the doctrines of demons, yet Bell directs people to read his work! Here's a link to Wilber's interview with the Buddhist Shambala Sun. http://www.shambhalasun.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2059 Here's what Rob Bell says to do in his book Velvet Elvis: "For a mind-blowing introduction to emergence theory and divine creativity, set aside three months and read Ken Wilber’s A Brief History of Everything." (Velvet Elvis, 192, endnote 143) I have reached a point of singular intolerance for those who continually justify the heresy of Rob Bell. Bell comes right out and says that there is a spark of the divine in every single human being. Scripture tells us we are by nature, "Children of wrath!" Somebody's lying here and it isn't God's Word!

What are your views on the emergent church and rob bell? by Lil Country Girl Q: I have heard a lot of conflicting thing and diff rent beliefs, what is your views about The Emergent Church and Rob Bell's views on them?

A: I don't think they do compromise doctrine (which doctrine, anyway, the Methodist's, Baptist's, Catholic's, Pentecostal's...?). I think he is relevant in the way he is trying to reach the unchurched people of the world, or to help people who were previously harmed by a church experience (and that is many, many people, sadly). I think his videos are moving and his books are to the point. His use of metaphor is exemplary. Lots of "church people" misunderstand the function of the emergent church. It is to take church where the unchurched people are, rather than spinning our wheels trying to get them to come to us. This is actually based upon the early church method of going into the world to make disciples. And people don't realize that the emergent churches do have a lot of ancient-future ritual -- for instance communion, but offering it in a multi-sensoral experience. I've been in super traditional churches and emergent churches, and I think there is room for both. ___________ No, they use scripture all the time, but relate it to modern real life situations.
