Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, or Revolver? by Julian M Q: I've noticed that in most "Favorite Album" Beatle polls, "Revolver" (1966) or "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967) tends to come up the most. I was curious as to see what people on Yahoo! Answers think. As for me, I will always love "Sgt. Pepper" the best. In fact, it's my 2nd favorite album of all time.

A: Revolver by a mile. This was the Beatles crossover album in which one would hear that the sound of The Beatles had evolved and it had taken on new life or morphed which was inevitable.... They were forerunners of acid rock which became apparent in Sgt. Peppers...another absolutely brilliant album..... revolver was perhaps a teaser...an appetizer for Sgt. Pepper.....both out of this world and over the moon brilliant...thank you.....I LOVE the Beatles.... I saw them on Ed Sullivan...they changed my life from the 10 year old cello playing, 8 book a day reading child to one with dreams who cried when she heard their music...they struck such a lost chord in me that i never lost myself again...and woke me up to real sound.....REAL MUSIC and ALL of it is still timeless. What exactly is a lonely hearts club? by Daisymae Q: Do they still exist? What is it's equivalence today? Poppy - youre funny! I was thinking of a Beatle song, Lonely Hearts club band and that is what prompted the question.

A: It is THE psychedelic album.

why did people assume that sgt peppers lonely hearts club band was an album to premote drugs? by deviouschaza12 Q: i love the beatles but why did people think they were premoting drums

A: Because of the song, "Lucy in the sky with Diamonds". People thought it stood for LSD. John Lennon said it was a song about a drawing his son, Julian did showing the stars in the sky. They were doing LSD at the time and never denied it but they also didn't tell other people to do it. It was just part of what was happening in the 1960's.

What made sgt peppers lonely hearts club a good album? by i question Q:

A: The Beatles. the cover, the music, the "hidden messages" lol

Why do so many people say the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (the movie) was bad? by Q: I've never seen it completely but for those who have seen it, why was it terrible, what was so bad about it? All I know is that there were many famous names in it and many famous bands.

A: It starred Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees. Coincidently both acts did come into the Beatles professional lives around the time that Sgt. Pepper was being recorded. I will spare you the details. About the only good thing that came from that movie was Aerosmith's version of "Come Together." Why that song was chosen and not a Sgt Pepper track is beyond my comprehension. Both Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees were at the height of their own fame and popularity at the time the film was released. The Beatles, should I say Paul, had ideas for a film to go along with the record. Some of those ideas were later included in the Magical Mystery Tour. Paul had this idea with a storyboard sketch that scenes would be set up involving the album songs and that some of the Beatles would play characters like Ringo being Billy Shears. There was a lot happening in 1967. People were smoking pot and experimenting with LSD and when people are drugged they tend to have all these wild ideas of what to do. Then the problem is trying to implement the ideas. The Beatles spend an incredible amount of time recording Sgt Pepper. At the time, taking months to record a rock and roll album was simply unheard of. Rock bands would go into the recording studio and crank out track recordings hoping that the next track to be recorded would be a hit. The producers might test market a song to radio stations. If the song went over well with fans the record would be cut on a single and the song that was less popular would wind up on the B side of the single, the 45rpm, or it would be included on the group's album as filler. As far as selecting tracks for the album, it was generally a compilation of the group's hit singles. The A side tracks would be selected as the first or last tracks on the 33rpm LP. In the middle the producer would select the B side tracks or other recordings that were not deemed hit recordings. Some B side tracks on the 45rpm discs were so bad that they never were included on the 33rpm LPs. It is important to see Sgt Pepper in the context of that time in the mid 60s. FM radio stations were starting to play not just the hit records on 45 discs but also several tracks on a 33rpm LP. Some stations would play an entire album on the radio, with commercial interruptions of course. Kids were starting to get into listening to albums, the complete albums. The Beatles were among those groups that had their listeners and fans wondering "what are they trying to tell us?" Sgt Pepper was one of those Beatles albums in which fans would listen the the album tracks and wonder what does it mean. Fixing a Hole where the rain gets in. She's Leaving Home. I'd Love to Turn you on. Then if you play the inner groove on the last track backwards you get this little message. At the end of A Day in the Life a dog whistle was recorded. All of this bizarre stuff was going on with the Beatles as well as other recording artists but it was new. In the music business albums were basically a collection of the hit records. By 1977, the number of groups that were recording concept albums was at its height. By that time, so many groups had either copied the Sgt Pepper concept or had taken the concept album to newere and greater heights. And the times had changed. In 1967, Johnson was President in the USA and the Vietnam War was in effect. The military draft was being enforced but many guys simply were deferring military service and going off to college or they simply dodged the draft altogether. Some of them went to Canada. It is difficult to imagine a time when a guy could literally disappear from a city, a state, or just move to Canada from the USA and just have a new life. There weren't the restrictions that are present now. A guy could simply take off and start a new life with another name and a new identity. The Beatles Sgt Pepper album was successful because it was recording during a time of change and unrest. Ten years later that time no longer existed. The kids had moved on to hearing the Bee Gees sing tracks from "Saturday Night Fever" and they were expecting that in this film. People have compared the sound of the Bee Gees to the Beatles. Their harmonies. Their producer had worked for Brian Epstein. Personally I think the Bee Gees were more like the Monkeys in that they were produced to be like the Beatles.

What genre of movies are The Wall, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, etc? by Kitchen Q: I don't consider them musicals, because then you have to include Rent, Mamma Mia, etc which i think i retarded. Are they considered Rock Opera's? or is there another name for them?

A: Well, the thing is that shows like Rent and Mama Mia are Broadway Musicals. I would most likely consider Sgt. Pepper's and The Wall to be rock operas, I suppose only because they don't fit in with the other Broadway musicals out there. If you look both Sgt. Pepper and The Wall up in wikipedia it mentions that both are a rock opera. I'm not too sure how much you trust wiki, but I think it sounds quite right. Best, Pam

How much money could i get for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album?? by Annie b Q: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album?? like the actual album not a CD o and im pretty sure its in good condition

A: unfortunately (and honestly)...probably not that much... when sellin' old records, comic books, etc...this is pretty much how it works: if the best ofer you get on the item is $10.00...it's only worth $10.00; no matter what price guides may claim... also, i have found beatles collectors to be among the hardest fans to sell to since they already have everything they can afford to have; and they like the stuff to be in stone mint condition... of course...you could try the e-bay approach...but yer probably not gonna get serious offers for it there...

How high were the Beatles when they created "Sgt peppers lonely Hearts club" album? by Edmond Dantes Q:

A: Well The Beatles were high for all of their albums. Before they had even recorded they had been taking drugs. In the early days they were all speed freaks taking speed to have the endurance to play all night in the clubs in Hamburg. Then they met Bob Dylan and he turned them on to Pot and writing better lyrics. He asked them if they wanted to smoke a joint and they were into it immediatly but admitted to him that they hadn't tried it before. Dylan commented about their hit I wanna hold your hand and asked about the lyric where John sings I get High I get High I get high. John was a bit embarrassed and had to tell him that he was actually singing I can't Hide I can't hide I can't hide. By the time they got to writing and recording Sgt. Peppers they had "Turned On" to L.S.D. or acid and that drug creates a complete altered state of reality so I would say they were very very very high. Hippies used to call it god in a sugar cube. They were also doing large amounts of the drug as well. They were having it imported in liquid form from Owsley the San Francisco chemist who reportedly made the very best L.S.D. They had it shipped in between lenses of film cameras where it was undetected because it was clear. However I would doubt that were high while actually recording the album because their producer George Martin would not allow any form of drugs in the studio plus playing on L.S.D. would not make for good playing at all. I'm sure tho that while not actually high at the time the creativity and Mindset of the L.S.D experience would still be present because of the frequency of which they were Tripping and the fact that the altered mindset brought about by L.S.D. can sometimes last for days. "I'd Love to turn you on" - the Beatles A day in the Life

Who designed the cover artwork for The Beatles, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club? by Chaz D Q: Who shot the photography for the album cover and who designed the final piece? What was their inspiration?

A: ~The name of the cover is "People We Like". The art director was Robert Fraser. The designers were Sir Peter Blake and his wife (at the time) Jann Haworth. The photographer was Michael Cooper. The actual shoot took about 3 hours, but it took close to three weeks to set it up after the the cutouts were prepped. The concept was a collaboration between Blake, Haworth and the boys in the band. John, as always, had the most input from the band, including the inclusion of Adolf Hitler in the collage. Hitler's cutout was included, but he is hidden, strictly by coincidence in the final product. The life-size cutout was placed behind the band on one of the bottom tiers and is too short to be seen because of the camera angle. He's more or less between Ringo and Paul, basically surrounded by Johnny Weissmuller, Stephen Crane, Marilyn Monroe, Larry Bell, David Livingston, William Burroughs and Issy Bonn, according to Blake. John also wanted to include Jesus Christ. Because of the controversy caused by John's "we're bigger than Jesus" remark a few months earlier, JC was vetoed and didn't make the final cut. George, Paul and Ringo also chose some of the persons depicted, but Ringo didn't contribute much. What was the inspiration? What inspires any artist to create any piece of art? However, the cover is consistent with much of Blake's other works, before and after "People We Like". The initial concept was to show the band (Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, not the Beatles) performing in a park. The idea grew and evolved from there. The earliest revisions included adding an audience. From there, the audience became famous persons and celebrities. That lead to inclusion of the Beatle's "heroes", icons and role models. Then John, being John, threw in a touch of controversy (like Hitler and Jesus). They then added friends, such as Bob Dylan and the Shirley Temple tribute to the Rolling Stones. It got crowded, so instead of showing the band performing, it was decided to simply depict the band surrounded by the personages selected. The park motif was preserved, somewhat, by the flowers in the foreground. Paul had suggested the original cover concept. He wanted an original psychedelic painting by the Dutch art collective "The Fool". Fraser convinced McCartney to abandon that idea because The Fool's work was not all that good and the style was a passing fancy that would date itself quickly. Some of the earliest releases of the album did use the McCartney/The Fool cover. Fraser then brought in Blake and Haworth.

How much does limited edition record The lonely hearts club band worth? by Q:

A: $3.00, no one knows wth they are.

Who chose the famous people to be on the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover? by Q: Did the Beatles themselves chose them? How did they come up with those famous figures?

A: The cover itself was created and designed by Robert Fraser, Peter Blake, and Jann Haworth. It was photographed by Michael Cooper. The Beatles themselves chose most of the figures who appeared on the cover. It created a huge headache for EMI's legal department because they had to obtain permission from those who were still alive at the time. Mae West orginially turned down a request to use her likeness but she relented when The Beatles sent her a personal letter asking permission. There were two other likenesses that were photographed but later removed. One was Leo Gorcey, who was removed because he requested a payment and the other was Mohandas Gandhi, who was taken out at the request of the record label because he was deemed too controversial.

Which footballer appeared on the cover of the Beatles, Seargeant Peppers lonely hearts club band? by I am who I am. Q: Obviously, this is a fun question. If you don't like it; p*** *** and don't post. The first "correct" answer wins. And it is not a trick question; there is a footballer on the album/cd cover. Name him. Well done chief: After the time is up, as promised, the points are yours. I've even asked scousers who hadn't a clue.

Singned Beatles album of Sargent Peppers lonely hearts club band record? by Q: My dad has an original record of Sargent peppers lonely hearts club band 1967 signed by Paul, John, Ringo and George. The record is in mint condition and i was just wondering if anyone knew the estimated value? thanks in advance

A: The real value of this piece is whatever someone will pay. But know this - that album must be worth at least $25,000, and probably more. Note that John and George have already passed, so that makes this piece even more valuable and rare. You should have this piece appraised and insured, because God forbid anything should ever happen to it. Take copious photos of the piece, and note privately in your own notes some tell-tale marks of this piece in case it is ever stolen or lost. And, know this, I am a Beatles fan, and I am absolutely floored that a piece like this even exists. Value it well - treasure it. Sell it only if you need to sell it.

What makes SGT Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band the monumental, influential album it is considered? by Hele Q: Im doing a research project on this album by the Beatles for an assessment at school. it would be really super awesome if anyone could give your opinions and facts as to what YOU think about this album, and why its so great, what makes it special etc, and WHY?. Or even why not. Any in depth and coherent opinions appreacited!

A: From the opening track, Sgt. Pepper broke new ground with the idea of beginning an album with an introduction. The Beatles certainly took the idea of a concept album to new ground with this musical preface explaining who these fictional characters are and why they will be performing for you. Likewise, closing the album (technically) with a reprise not only effectively gave the album a great sense of coming full circle, but it paved the way for virtually every concept album that came after it (everything from Tommy to The Wall to American Idiot). As for the rest of the music, it continued where Revolver left off, solidifying the Beatles as the leaders of the psychedelic movement. Tracks like “Lucy in the Sky…,” “Being for the Benefit…,” and “Within You, Without You” (Harrison’s only cut, which he had to fight for) progress the colorful, drug induced psychedelic production further than it had ever been. Meanwhile, pieces like “She’s Leaving Home,” When I’m Sixty Four,” and “Good Morning, Good Morning” implement classical instruments (courtesy of producer George Martin) that broke barriers for what a “pop” song could do. Every song on Sgt. Pepper, from the playful to the poignant, revolutionized music and the final track is nothing short of a masterpiece. Often viewed as the greatest collaboration between Lennon and McCartney, “A Day in the Life” may be the band’s best track. The song was sequenced as an epilogue (the album itself technically ended with the “Sgt. Pepper” reprise), and the way it segues with an acoustic guitar still sends chills down our spines forty years later. It’s a great example of how Lennon could make wonderful art without much effort; like “Being for the Benefit…,” the lyrics are entirely based on advertisements and articles he saw. It’s really nothing more than that. Lennon’s portion bookends while McCartney takes the middle section. As usual, it counters Lennon’s pessimism with an optimistic romp before brilliantly going back to the beginning. Perhaps most astonishing is how George Martin segues these two sections; he has several instruments slow build from their lowest note to their highest, creating a sound both chaotic and beautiful. Even after “A Day in the Life” ends, the album still isn’t over because the Beatles innovate once again by implementing a short loop in the groove of the album designed to jolt listeners as they get up to change the record. After several seconds of silence, a high pitched frequency is emitted before an eerie sound collage is heard. After forty years, and while knowing it’s coming, it’s still creepy. Even though it’s not really a hidden track, this is the first time that a band purposely hid sounds on an album, forcing you to wait through silence to hear it. The final aspect of honoring Sgt. Pepper is how it was involved in the infamous rumors of Paul McCartney’s death in 1969. Upon releasing Abbey Road, the rumors began, and fans researched clues in the band’s back catalogue. Sgt. Pepper carries many. Perhaps the most alarming is the fact that when you hold a mirror in the middle of the HEARTS part of the drum, the reflection turns it into “HE ◊ DIE,” with the diamond pointing to Paul. Other clues include the flowers being on top of a grave and the bloody glove and toy race car on the doll on the right of the cover. And of course, the fact that McCartney is facing away from us on the back cover is very symbolic. Lyrically, there are many clues, with the most obvious pertaining to “A Day in the Life.” Of course McCartney never died, and to this day no one involved with the band has stated if the rumors and clues were intentional publicity, but that doesn’t stop it from still being fascinating to examine, which Sgt. Pepper allows us to do. While the claim of Sgt. Pepper as the greatest album of all time is debatable, it is clearly one of the most important. From the artwork to the music to lyrics and legend, it still amazes us visually and sonically, and I believe it will continue to for decades to come. It’s amazing that an album released forty years ago and with a running time less than forty minutes can still bring us so much joy, inspiration and intrigue, but then again they were the Beatles, and this is Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
