Do you think Giant Squid would be aggressive towards humans? by Q: Obviously they could do a lot of harm. Their tentacles would rip your face off. I know it lives in deep water and never comes in contact with humans, but what's your opinion if it did?

A: Humboldt squids attack and kill humans every year.

giant squid invasion in california, people think its a good thing. i think not? by jelly bean Q: why would giant squids by the hundreds come close to california's coast? somethings not right. could it be a dangerous change in the waters? could it be global warming? is a natural disaster approaching? i don't know but i don't think its a good thing.

A: Big 'blooms', whether dinoflagellates, Humboldt Squid, jellyfish or anything else, indicate something out of whack. Perhaps predator pressure has been released because the predators are gone or sharply reduced; perhaps some food supply is much more available for some reason (a competitor is gone, or the food supply has had a 'bloom' of its own); perhaps some other condition has sharply changed to the benefit of the 'blooming' organism. In a sense, it doesn't matter that much - what comes next is the important thing; usually the effects of the bloom ripple through the area as well (a whole lot of stuff is going to be eaten that might not normally be, which may well cause problems for the rest of the community, and a whole lot of things are going to die and be food for other things that have an unsustainable boom of their own, which triggers its own changes, etc.). What happens to an area after a horde of locusts go through? How is the Great Plains different after massive cattle grazing than it was before? Big disturbances might possibly be recovered from "normally" (boom-and-bust" cycles are not unknown, after all), but in this case, where these blooms are pretty much unprecedented in the historical record, it's far more likely to be both a signal and a cause of massive changes in the ecosystem, which people will likely put down to other causes (sea lions eating up all the fish!). It's certainly cause for concern.

Any one else share an interest with the Giant Squid? by Q: I've always had a fascination for this creature. Anyone else share an interest with maybe the only real "sea monster"?

A: If it's cooked properly, I'm interested.

how do you kill the giant squid thing on super paper mario on wii? by Rebecca H Q: i've tried flipping in 3d and i can't get past it! and it's hard to swim and attack at the same time!

A: One of his tentacles is a different color. You need to attack that one. Use Bowser's fire breath; it makes the battle much easier (although I guess it doesn't make much sense for him to breathe fire underwater, but whatever).

What is Arnold going to do about the giant squid that are attacking? by JAMESSLOTH Q: California?? Will he terminate them or destroy them like the Predator. Or will he make them the Chargers new mascot?? GO SQUIDS!!!

A: This is interesting! I have not heard about this. Perhaps their food source has invaded California and it has led them to follow. There could be many reasons, some of which are not known. I hope it is not something bad!

Songs about giant squid encountering icebergs off the coast of Europe, whilst fighting for their life? by Q: to avoid the angry Calamari chefs? Please, any song you can find about these kinds of current global issues would be phenomenal.

What is the difference between a colossal squid and a giant squid? by kylebakesb Q:

A: The colossal squid has a larger mantle, that is the head and shorter tentacles or arms than a giant squid. Also the colossal squid has swiveling hooks inside the suckers and not basically teeth like in the giant squid. Also, colossal squid are Antarctic. Antarctic cranch squid is another name. The colossal squid looks more like small common squid if it were huge. Giant squid look more stretched out than small common squid.

Who would win in an underwater battle, a Giant Squid or a 4-member family of Polar Bears? by Inmate No. 6602224175 Q: The polar bear family consists of one mother, one father, and two kids. Sorry if I'm being a little stereotypical.

A: haha love this question. its kinda dumb but its something to think about.. I would say the squid would win cause it doesnt need the air. And the bear kids would just sit around, their kids. But if the mother see's the kids in danger she will pick one h*ll of a fight.. but I would still pick the squid. It could also use its ink.

Is it true that the bald eagle is a close relative to the giant squid? by uw_wi_josh Q: My biology professor says he can hardly tell the difference between the two. I think it's just a coincidence that they look alike What does science tell us?

A: After seeing the brand-new first photos of the giant squid alive in its habitat, I agree with you that there are resemblances... Well, both fly... I mean one flies under water, which I guess technically would be swimming. Did you know they're jet powered, squid that is, they take in water at the front and expel water behind for propulsion just like jet planes work in air. Eagles take in air through their skin and feathers, but they don't expel it for propulsion, bad choice there. And they both have feathers, except the squid doesn't. They DO both have BEAKS! Now that can't be overlooked. And they both have tentacles, but the eagle's tentacles have bones in them are are called "legs". Hmmm... I could go on, but I put it to you that NOONE has ever seen a Giant Squid and a Bald Eagle in the same place. One lives deep in the ocean and one in the sky. Perhaps the Bald Eagle, proud symbol of America, has had a secret identity all this time? Well, with the new squid photos I think the jig is up.

Giant squid attack, has it ever really happened? by 8corsair Q: Are there any documented cases of a giant squid attacking a submarine, or any vessel for that matter?

A: The short answer is yes. But as to whether they were true reports or not is open to speculation. I think you actually mean colossal squid as giant squid usually means the Humbolt squid which are normally not more than six foot long During the second world war there were several cases where ships were attacked and over a hundred years earlier documented cases of squid attacks on boats were recorded in deep waters near the Maldive Islands off India. There is no doubt that squid have been known to grow very large. The Humbolt squid which fisherman in Mexico and Southern California catch commercially can grow up to six feet long and are extremely aggressive. They frequently attack one of their own species when it is being pulled to the surface and also attack divers with several sometime coordinating their attacks which can be very frightening. If the few reports we have are to be believed the colossal squid grows over a hundred feet long. I have personally been attacked with my mouthpiece being pulled away and that was only a small one with a body about the size of a dog. I was able to stab it and drive it off. Have a look at this web site-http:www.unmuseum.org/squid.htm. The problem about investigating reports of large squid attacks is simple. To start with their habitat is at the bottom of the sea where the pressure is very great and it is thought that they cannot survive long at the surface for several reasons. Their blood can not supply enough oxygen at surface pressure and being adapted to great depths where the temperature is very cold the warm water at the surface is too hot. Also in tropical temperatures the flesh would very soon decompose or become food for sea birds and other scavengers.

are giant squid dangerous to a diver? by IamGAD Q: ive heard of the fabled giant squid and collosal squid and they look like they'd be a scary creature to run into in the depths of the ocean....are they dangerous? and how would u end up running into one underwater? has bthere ever been a collosal/giant squid ever been documented killing a human?

A: Of course they are dangerous but the chance of you run into one is rarer than if you get hit by lightning.

How is the anatomy of the giant squid adapted to its marine environment? by Amber F Q: We're studying oceans in my class, and that's my research question

A: a great place to start your research would be to look at the physical attributes of the squid and figure out how they help it. The Giant Squid has some of the largest eyes in the animal kingdom. What do you know about it's environment that would lead to such an adaptation? Learn more about its food sources and work backwards; what parts of a squid's anatomy help it capture food? Finally, think about some of the properties of water and the marine environment. What physical traits of the squid have formed to deal with things like movement through a viscous liquid? Hope this helps!

How much money does it take to buy a giant squid? by mr.zimbabweeaterofbabies Q: My friend said he was attacked by one at sea and i wanted to buy him one for his birthday. I was on the ship with him. Me him and the ship captain were the only survivors. I lost my arm on it. ow.

A: You cannot buy giant squids, as they are rarely ever seen other than floating up on beaches dead. There is only one video clip of a giant squid live. If they caught one, you'd have to outbid universities bidding in the millions. Your friend did not get attacked by a giant squid. They are deep sea creatures.

How does the giant squid affect the ecosystem? by G-uNOT Q: What would happen to the ecosystem without it?

A: We really don't know much about the giant squid or the ecosystem it inhabits. Living giant squid have only been observed once, very recently. Everything else we know comes from dead specimens. They are likely very important predators in their environment, feeding on pretty much any kind of fish they want. In turn, they also appear to the favourite prey of the Physeter, or Sperm Whale. Sperm Whale often bear hundreds of scars on their faces from the ragged tooth-lined suckers of the Giant Squid, obtained in titanic deep-sea battles, and the hard, indigestible beaks of Giant Squid are often found in the stomach contents of the whales. So no one really knows what would happen to their ecosystem without Giant Squids. We don't even know how many of them there are.

Have we captured a Giant Squid on tape? by Remy Q: So I saw an episode of Monster Quest about 6 months ago. Off of the western coast of Mexico, a "large" squid was captured on film in deep waters. But I'm not sure if the film was reliable enough to conclude that it was a giant squid. I also have seen Google Images, but I still don't know how reputable the sites and images are. Has anyone captured this colossal creature alive, and on tape?

A: Not only on tape. There is an exhibition in New Zealand of an actual Colossal Squid captured (but now dead) .It was disected, and videos made.

who would win in a fight; a giant squid, a kangaroo, or a monkey? by Q: so kangaroos can punch and kick, a monkey can also do that but they would be less vulnerable to the giant squids teeth tentacles ...hmmm i dont thinnk the kangaroo would win sources; malcom in the middle

A: A giant squid for sure.

Did the giant squid live they caught? by Christal Q: I just dont understand people. The news of the New Zealand fisherman catching a giant 990lbs squid.. So im looking at the pictures and it looks like they caught it- drug it in on their boat- and took pics- but it wasnt what they wanted to catch so- did they throw it back or did they kill it just to have it as a trophy? If something was so amazing about it why wouldnt they tag it and put it back? Sometimes I think Man does some stupid stuff

A: I was wondering the same thing. Then I read that they froze it and are taking it to a museum to preserve and study it. How they could kill something that they themselves say is so rare -- it's beyond me. Here's the link to the article I read. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070222/ap_on_fe_st/new_zealand_colossal_squid_4

Name of the movie with a Giant Squid or Octopus? by Russell Q: The Giant creature attacked a huge passenger ship, and each of its little tentacles also have a mouth and teeth. The end has the main character and his women riding out of the ship in a jetski as it explodes. I think this movie came out in the 90's. And at the very very end, they land on this island, and a giant creature lets out a yell, and when the camera pans out, something huge is running through the trees.

What music videos is this? It involves the band being in a retro space battle with a giant squid? by Mitch Q: Who is the band that made this video, or what is the name of the song? It was either a squid or alien with tentacles, either one was cheesy.

A: Sounds like The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love. Could be wrong, but it was a pretty cheesy video. There's a giant alien squid thing on the ship about a minute from the end of the video...

How many Giant squid have been found in Australia? by amanda Q: im looking for how many giant squid have been found in Australia or off the coast of Australia

A: That's a tough one to answer, because the squids are so good at hiding. It was only last year that a serious infestation was discovered in the Sydney Opera House - they would never have been noticed except for a disrupted performance of Rigoletto where both Rigoletto and the Count went missing halfway through the second act, and were later discovered (more or less) in the squid's nest deep in the cellars. As I recall, 5 or 6 adults were finally captured, and about a dozen babies, but they weren't completely convinced they had caught them all. One was even found hunting in the men's room, camouflaged as a toilet. It was in all the papers.

What is the difference between a giant squid and a colossal squid? by kiki Q: Size? Also how are squid so different from the octopus?

A: the main difference is that colossal squid are bigger than giant squid, as their name suggests. colossal squid can be up to 14 meters long, whereas giant squid have only been recorded to reach a maximum of 13 meters long. furthermore, the giant squid's mantle is only about two meters long, since its tentacles make up most of its length. however, the colossal squid has a longer mantle and shorter tentacles. octopus are different from squid in many ways: firstly, octopuses don't have a pen in their mantle, unlike squids, which is a remnant of their ancestors' shell. it's a skeletal structure made of calcium carbonate, which gives squids their rigidity and rocket-like shape. octopuses are much more squishy because they don't have any skeletal elements, and they can contort their bodies to fit through very small crevices, and even shift the positions of their internal organs. octopuses have eight tentacles, usually equal in length, whereas squid have ten tentacles, with two being longer than the other eight. squid also have lateral fins on their mantles, with which they can swim, octopuses only use their tentacles for swimming, but they can also use them for walking on the sea bed. here's a video of octopuses walking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zD1GQJHcq0 and one of them contorting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHHgjeB-cSI and here's a video of a squid to see the difference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV2iUCXl7uI

What was the Rock Video, where there space ship was getting attacked by a giant Squid? by Q: I can not think of it for nothing...in the video there in a spaceship rocking out, then they start getting attacked by a giant squid, or some kind of octopus...I really need to know before tonight is over......ITS KILLING ME....

A: I think it's... The Darkness - I Believe in a thing Called Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrCkdjPqWbo

Is the blue whale larger than the giant squid? by Kerri h Q: What is the size of the blue whale compared to the giant squid?

A: "The blue whale is the largest creature that has ever lived. At 30 meters in length and weighing 300 tons it is far larger than even the biggest dinosaur. It's tongue weighs as much as an elephant. It's heart is the size of a small car. And some of it's blood vessels are so wide you could swim down them. It's tail alone is the width of a small aircraft wing".

Do you think this is why they have never been able to catch or keep a giant squid? by athorgarak Q: The giant squid (only found dead) is one of the great mysteries. They have vacuumed up a few just hatched babies, but the soon die. I think that they die due to the huge pressure difference and that is probably why they are not seen except when dead. What do you think?

A: good theory as good as any

is the giant squid coming out of newport and balboa pier? by andrewa Q: i heard that giant squids were being caught in thew piers(newport and balboa) is it true?

A: Full moon and bait fish will play a big role in how close they come to the pier. Last time they did it was just a couple of days. Tonight could be the night better get going!

why is it so hard to capture or study the giant squid? by Gaga Q: was just reading a headlinie on a giant squid carcass washing ashore. they are rarely seen and captured on film, let alone being able to study their behavior. with all the technology we have, why is it so difficult to observe them? i know it's deep down, but i thought we had equiptment that can withstand that kind of pressure? i have always been fascinated by this kind of stuff, especially if one of my favorite books as a child was 20,000 leagues under the sea had a mythical giant squid hugging down a ship. my understanding is they are rare because they are too deep for us to explore at length. if you could sit at the bottom of the ocean and observe you would see plenty.

A: There are a lot of factors working against us here. 1. giant squids are rare. 2. The ocean is a VERY big place. 3. the submersible we would put down into the ocean to search for this squid would probably scare the squid off. Therefore when one washes up on land we should learn as much as we can from it.

Can a Giant Squid really eat a human? by RT Q: Has this even happened before? I hear that Giant squid eat their own so can they eat human?? Anyone know some facts I'm just curious about these big monsters of the sea. So I know they can kill a human but will they eat them as food if they are hungry?

A: From wikipedia: Feeding The fabled underwater encounter between the sperm whale and giant squid, from a diorama at the American Museum of Natural History. The fabled underwater encounter between the sperm whale and giant squid, from a diorama at the American Museum of Natural History. Recent studies show that giant squid feed on deep-sea fish and other squid species. They catch prey using the two tentacles, gripping it with serrated sucker rings on the ends. Then they bring it toward the powerful beak, and shred it with the radula (tongue with small, file-like teeth) before it reaches the esophagus. They are believed to be solitary hunters, as only individual giant squid have been caught in fishing nets. Fish such as the Hoki are among the giant squid's diet.[4] Adult giant squids' only known predators are sperm whales and possibly Pacific sleeper sharks, found off Antarctica, but it is unknown whether these sharks hunt squid, or just scavenge squid carcasses. It has also been suggested that pilot whales may feed on giant squid. Juveniles are preyed on by deep sea sharks and fishes. Because sperm whales are skilled at locating giant squid, scientists have tried to observe them to study the squid. end quote Since hoki can be up 4 ft in length it may be possible but I have yet to see any verifiable reports of this happening.

What is the evolution of the giant squid? by Q: Do we know where giant squids came from? Whats is the evolution? Please provide a link with proof so i can use it!

A: How long has the Giant Squid been in those waters? Did they evolve from creatures that were once or land or smaller species in the water? Such questions are still out there as we simply don’t have the right information yet about their evolution process. It is believed that they have been able to successfully adapt to their environment for millions of years. Perhaps the additional arms were one way that they evolved for movement in the water?

Is there any evidence to suggest a giant squid would attack a person like the mythical kraken does? by Professor Armitage Q: There are centuries old drawings of "krakens" attacking boats and the crews on board. The Humboldt squid had attacked people only because they were being heavily fished and dying in the area. These squid live too deep in the ocean for human interaction, but say it comes up to the surface at night. Would a giant squid or even the colossal squid attack a person?

A: I don't see any reason why a giant squid or colossal squid would pass up the opportunity to chow down on a tasty meal-sized package like a human should they encounter one. Especially since humans don't swim very quickly or have any other defensive adaptations to protect them from giant squid. Since most cephalopods are insatiably curious and also active predators, I'd be more surprised if they didn't try to take a bite if they could. So we're probably very lucky that these critters seem to stay in the ocean depths, and don't come up to the surface at night.

Whats the difference between a colossal squid and a giant squid? by Johnny C Q: is it the same? and if the colossal squid is bigger why is the giant more famous?

A: The giant squid is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae, represented by as many as eight species. Giant squid can grow to a tremendous size: recent estimates put the maximum size at 13 metres (43 ft) for females and 10 metres (33 ft) for males from caudal fin to the tip of the two long tentacles . The Colossal Squid sometimes called the Antarctic or Giant Cranch Squid, is believed to be the largest squid species. It is the only known member of the genus Mesonychoteuthis. Though it is known from only a few specimens, current estimates put its maximum size at 12–14 metres (39–46 feet) long, based on analysis of smaller and immature specimens, making it the largest known invertebrate. It is said that a colossal squid can live up to 120-150 days estimate by scientists who study squid. Unlike the giant squid, whose arm and tentacles only have suckers lined with small teeth, the Colossal Squid's arms and tentacles are also equipped with sharp hooks: some swiveling, others three-pointed These hooks can be found to be sharp as tiger claws, as they can easily tear open human flesh. Its body is wider and stouter, and therefore heavier, than that of the giant squid. Colossal Squids are believed to have a longer mantle than giant squids, although their tentacles are shorter.

Does the Georgia aquarium still have giant squid? by Grrr Q: I went there in 2009 for my birthday, they had a giant squid on display on the second floor, I don't think that many people knew about it or atleast didnt care (I flipped out!) but I want to bring someone with me again to show them, is it still there?

A: Yes according to the website the preserved giant squid is still on display. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and I don't remember seeing it, but I wasn't specifically looking for it either. http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/animalguide/coldwaterquest/giantsquid.aspx

Is it possible for a human to make friends with a giant squid ? by Q: Just saw the article on giant squids in California waters. The question occurred to me if it would be possible for a human to make friends with a giant squid. Tame it as a pet. Or, would the giant squid not recognize this and just try to rip you apart and eat you ?

A: Give it a try, I bet cave men wondered if they could tame wolves. Now we have dogs. Keep us posted.

What are some traits of the giant squid that give it a reputation as a monster? by X Q: What are some traits of the giant squid that give it the reputation as a monster? Why are these traits monster-like?

How much larger is the Colossal Squid than the Giant Squid? by XxChaplainxX Q: My friends were having an argument about the comparative sizes of the giant and colossal squid. One of my friends says that the size of the colossal squid dwarfs that of the giant squid. Another friend says that the colossal squid is only slightly larger than the giant squid. Who is right on this matter?

Giant Squid? by Moustache Fight Q: I am the captain of a small fishing vessel operating in the Pacific, near Southern California (We have a satellite internet connection, handy for both GPS and checking my email when the fish aren't biting). To make a long story short, we've managed to haul up what may be a giant squid. We've put in a few calls to local news channels and they've agreed to come check it out. The thing can't quite fit on my ship (I'd estimate about 25 feet) and its tentacles are trailing in the water. Anyway, here's my question. What is the best way to cook and prepare a giant squid? I think it'd make a historic victory meal for my crew if I was able to serve up a few pieces of the first giant squid ever captured. We'll be in port in about two days, so keep your eye on the news!

A: Wow. That's so cool, and lucky. Take lots of pictures, especially if you're going to eat the thing. I'd assume you could cook Giant Squid like regular squid. Here are some Squid Recipe pages: http://www.mindspring.com/~erica/squid/recipes.html (This one looks like the best site.) http://www.squidfish.net/squidrecipes.shtml

giant squid? by Olivia T Q: how many tentacles do giant squid have? and do they suction cup things?? thanx

A: They have 8 arms + 2 longer tentacles, and yup they do have suction cups (sperm whales, who eat the squids, sometimes get suction cup scars from fighting with the squid).
