What is the best electric dog fence company? by Mysterious Q: I will probably be getting a border collie mix. I can't get a wooden or chain link fence since I live on a three acre property, I can't ask my parents for that unfortunatly. I would if I could.

A: Invisible Fence is by far the best company. We have tried other companies, but the fence has has breaks in the line, the collars have stopped working, and other problems. Invisible Fence is a little costly, but it is worth it in the end. They will even come and install the fence for you!

Should I get a dog to keep me protected and also as company ? by Coffee and Cheese Lady Q: Should I get a dog to keep me company now that my husband will be working ovenights? I will be by myself from late nights to 7 a.m. The dog we had died two years ago and so I know that he is open to a pet. I want it also for security/protection.

A: Definitely. They keep good company and are sooo loyal. be sure to get one that knows who to bark at, or attack. be sure to get one also that looks tough, but is a sweetheart to you; (your husband too) and i would probably recommend are Dobermans, German shepherds, Rottweilers, bullmastiffs or a pit bull. i hope this was helpful. :)

Should I get another dog, Chihuahua or another breed for company? by Sandi Q: My female Chihuahua is a real person/company dog and I feel guilty leaving her for 3 full days a week while I work and my daughter is in school. She wants to come in the car all the time and loves our company. Should I get a companion dog for her and what breed? Would it make her life easier or more stressfull?...should I get a desxed male or another female? I was thinking of a dog from a shelter. (She is desexed.)

A: Get one that fits YOUR lifestyle. Try the breed selector quiz and see what breed(s) show up that are right for you. http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do A shelter is the best place to look for a new dog, try these places. :0) http://www.1-800-save-a-pet.com/cgi-bin/public/petsearch.cgi/search_dogs_form http://www.petharbor.com/ http://dogsindanger.com/ http://www.petfinder.com/ http://www.craigslist.org/about/cities.html Adoption fees are not expensive, and vary from shelter to shelter.

If you were to name a dog coat company, what would you call it? by Socks Q: I've been making dog coats for a while, but I don't know what to call the company. I'd love a name like "chilly dogs" but that name is already taken. Got any ideas. Thanks!

How can I decipher which company my dog is microchipped by? by narari9 Q: We received a dog in the beginning of June. We got him through my sister-in-law's friend of a friend's mother. Really complicated. He came from California because of somebody's divorce, who knows. He came with his microchip number, but I have no idea how to transfer the information or who to contact because I have no idea what brand of microchip it is. The last the first few figures are 0A101, the last figure is an E. I figured those would be the most significant. Thank you!

A: You need to take him somewhere there is a chip reader. Your vet should have one. They can read the chip for you and there is a number on the chip reader you can phone. They may ask for the number of the chip reader when you phone them. When I used chip readers, we had 2 different ones that read different chips.

Creative names for a dog accessory making company? by kelicant Q: I'm doing a project for a business class. I have to come up with a name for my company that will make dog accessories, like hats, goggles, and snuggie type stuff. Got any good names?

Is it beneficial to get another dog of the same breed to keep the dog company? by JT Q: Ive got one dog and i bought him 3 weeks ago and hes housebroken but is going to be living outdoors. He is living in the conservatory at the moment He is a white german shepherd and we where thinking of getting a black and tan puppy a about a month younger than this one. also, will they stop listening to us and form a pack between them

A: You didn't say how old the current dog is, and that's an important factor. If your dog is under 5 months of age, it's not reliably housebroken yet. Outdoor dogs who spend most of the day outside get used to going outside, and that helped with my 2 new pups. They will not stop listening to you and form their own pack UNLESS you don't do what is needed to be alpha pack leader. They can be excellent company for each other. My pups play fight to learn how to protect themselves and they enjoy each other's company so much that they sleep all over each other. But I am the one who feeds them and I'm pack leader and do what it takes so they know this fact. -!-

Should I get another dog to keep mine company? by Q: My dog lives outside and has been running away a lot recently (He's always come back). I've been considering getting another dog to keep him company because I leave the house a lot. Would it be fair to just leave him on his own? Thanks. :)

A: You shouldn't leave dogs alone but yes this is probably why. The dog may see a person or another dog and run to it for company. If you don't want to get another dog try take him in the house for a bit. Its hardly fun outside! Hope i helped xx

Help on finding a shipping company to fly my dog from yyz to lhr? by SJ_Chick Q: I need to know if anyone has experience in having shipped their small dog from Toronto to London England. Can you sue a company for killing your dog? by Brenda Q: My dog suffocated on a bag of Lays, and is it possible to sue the company for her death? Ive heard of many stories of dogs suffocating because they couldnt get their head out of the bag, but no one has sued the company. The bag was the cause of death.

A: You say you have heard stories of it then why leave it where the dog could get it. Your fault and no case to sue Lays.

What dog insurance company do you use? by Mel Q: I am deciding between VPI Pet Insurance and ASPCA Insurance. I need something that will cover check ups, emergencies and accidents. My dog is already neutered. If you have any other choices, please tell and tell WHY you use it so I can do a comparison.

A: I have Trupanion. They don't have claim limits and they cover 90% (no benefits schedules) so no matter how big your bill is, they cover 90% of it. Watch out for benefits schedules because sometimes they can get you-- like if it says "surgery x costs $200" and then your dog needs surgery x but your vet charges you $800, guess what: the insurance company will only cover 80-90% of the $200. You can also choose a $0 deductible (or anywhere up to $1000) with Trupanion. I'm really happy with the company and they are really easy and straight forward to understand, definitely check them out!

Should I get another dog to keep my 1 year old Lab company? by bjr Q: We work alot and our dog is by himself sometimes, thats why were thinking maybe another dog could keep him company.

A: Labs are people dogs, but do enjoy the company of other dogs. Remember, labs love to play and two together will get well energetic sometimes especially when they get board.

Where can I find liability insurance for a professional dog walking company? by maven Q: I am a 22 year old college student who is starting up my own dog walking business and want to go about everything as professionally as possible.

A: Look up an Independent Agent in your area and go from there. They will help you and give you what you need. You should be able to get a small Business Owner's Policy (BOP), it will likely $500, maybe less.

How to start my own Dog Walking company? by ShadyBeeBoppinsMcGee Q: I am interested in starting a dog walking/pet sitting service. Has anyone does this that can give me start-up advice? I know I need to be insured and bonded, but not sure exactly how/what that means. Any advice is much appreciated!!

A: Talk with an insurance agent about insurance and bonding. They are both forms of insurance. Otherwise make some flyers and business cards and get out there. You might want to approach dog groomers, Animal Hospitals, pet supply and see if you can post your cards and flyers.

To all dog owners: What characteristics/services would you ideal dog walking/dog day care company offer? by Q: I'm trying to start a successful dog walking company and would like to know what customers want. Thanks all!

moving company put dog in a box and he died on the trip? by Q: the stupid moving company put my dog in a box and then he got crushed when a desk fell on his box in the back of the moving truck. what should i tell my kids happened?

A: Tell them that their parent didn't have enough brains to crate the dog and transport it properly in a SAFE vehicle. I'm guessing this is, once again, another troll question. If it's not, don't go out and purchase a new dog, ever.

Have you ever used a dog DNA company to determine what kind of mixed-breed dog you have? by SeaUrchina Q: If so, which one? Do you think the results were believable? Would you recommend that company?

A: I don't do mutts. I don't waste money on FAKE SCAM GIMMICKS.

What price should it be a WEEK if I start a dog walking company? by Monica Rosa Q: I am SO broke and i really don't know what to do, so i thought up some ideas and this is one that i think i could do. So how much do you guys think i should charge to walk someones dog a week? -one for 5 times a week -one for 3-4 times a week -one for 1-2 time a week thanks!

A: Phone a few dog walkers who are advertising around your area and see what they are charging. You should also have insurance in case a dog breaks free from you and something happens to it. Another scenario is if the dog has an altercation with another dog. You, being the person in control of the dog would be responsible for any vet fees. This is where insurance protects you. I would be happy to pay a dog walker on the days I can't walk my dog but I would check that they had insurance to cover any mishaps.

Now that Michele Bachmann has dropped out of the race will she pursue a modeling career for a corn dog company? by Q: Jealous leftists also love women who can handle a foot long corn dog without taking a breath.

A: She'll continue her stellar work in the US House, and jealous leftists will continue hating her for it!

Buy another dog to keep my other dog company? by Nina Q: I have a maltese/poodle who I love, but I feel bad because both me and my fiance work most of the day so she is alone for a good 8 hours a day. She is really good when we are gone (rarely any accidents), but I want to get another dog to keep her company. And also I just want another dog in general. I don't want another puppy, but if I get another dog I doubt it will be as good as she is about staying home that long. Is there any type of dog that is good for long periods of time as long as there is another dog with them? I know this is a weird question, because most people would say it is bad to leave a dog that long alone, but my fiance stops home sometimes to take her out. Just want some opinions..thanks!!

A: just remember when you have to travel some one will have to look out for 2 dogs . most people will take one dog but don;t like taking two dogs.vet bills will double.i know i have two dogs its a problem when going on vacation.

What does the Bark Busters dog training company charge to train your dog? by Jay Q: Hi. I was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost for a dog trainer from Bark Busters to train my dog. My dog jumps up, barks when the doorbell rings, does not come when called, etc. If you could give me an estimate of how much it costs to use Bark Busters, that'd be great! Thanks! i am to lazy to call right now. ;) anyone who has used it before?

A: I wouldn't recommend Bark Busters unless you plan on doing a lot of the work. They will not come to your dog and train them for you. They will come to your house, tell you a proper plan of action... show you what to do and then go on their merry way. You have to spend most of the time training them yourself. This isn't necessarily a bad thing--but does require that you be the one to implement the procedures. We paid $695 for a lifetime guarantee. Then $195 for an additional dog. I would not recommend them personally--I would have rather taken them to puppy training classes and spent the money that way.

What is the cheapest but good dog training company? by GSDMAN Q: Im 13 and I tried to potty train my dog but he peed where I wanted him to pee for only 1 week now hes starting to pee everywhere again. I need a trainer that is good at potty training dogs.

A: first be sure to have him on a feeding schedule.. then you will know when he has to potty. dante gets breakfast at 7 and a drink.. then i pick everything up for the day.. then dinner at 6 with a drink. i pick up his water around 8 and listen to see if he drinks anymore. when he drinks, just take him out to potty a few minutes later. after he goes, give him lots of hoorays and hugs adn scratches... then he knows he did a good job. also, be sure to clean up the old potty spots in the house reallly good. then he cant smell where he went and think its ok to go there again. good luck!

Moving company put dog in a box and he died on the trip? by Q: the stupid moving company put my dog in a box and then he got crushed when a desk fell on his box in the back of the moving truck. what should i tell my kids happened?

A: Oh my goodness! That is crazy. Why would they do that?????

How do I tell which company my dog is micro-chipped with? by Q: I recently adopted a dog from some people. I was told she was micro-chipped but the guy couldn't remember the company name as he had her chipped at the military base. I had the vet check her chip, she is indeed chipped. Now my issue is how do I determine which company she is registered with? I have no tags or paper work for the chipping only the number written down from the vet. The guy I adopted her from can't remember which base he was stationed at when they purchased the dog. If you can help it would be GREAT!

A: Easy - call any of the microchip companies and tell them the number. I work at a Vet clinic and that's all I do. If it doesn't belong to them, they can usually tell me which company it does belong to.

If you were to name a dog coat company, what would you name it? by Socks Q: I've been making dog coats for a while, but I don't know what to name the company. I like "chilly dogs" but unfortunately that name is taken. Originality would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I'm thinking of getting a rabbit to keep my dog company while im at work.? by Bill Q: Does anyone have any experience with this combination. My dog is a 2 year old (supposed to be pure pit) i think he has some bulldog though. He has endless energy and i was thinking a bunny to run around the yard with him and inside might be good. Any input or advice would be awesome, thanks

A: Are you being serious?? and I mean that as a serious question. I don't know whether you are being genuine or putting this post on for a reaction because there is an obvious answer?? Rabbits can get along well with dogs in some cases ( I have five rabbits and my dog gets on great with them) however, not in any circumstances should a dog be left alone with a rabbit, even if they do appear to get along. A dog should never be allowed to 'run around' with a rabbit as the rabbit won't see this as 'play' but as a serious threat to it's life. It will run out of fear, not because it thinks the dog is trying to play a game. Rabbits are prey animals, doesn't matter how domesticated they are they will still display certain behaviours associated with being prey. If you want something for your dog to run around with then get a dog, you clearly don't know enough about rabbits to own one.

What is the best company of dog food for my Westie? by dogperson22 Q: I was just wondering what Would be the best Company of dog food to feed my Westie-and something that was made for Westies, so then he wont get any skin infections. I heard that Iams dog food isn't that good. i was also wondering what i would need to get for my westie before i get him.

A: There is no food that is the *best*, different individual dog may thrive on different foods. What is best for one may not be the best for the next. And just because a food is good quality, it doesn't mean it will jive the best for your dog. What you want to find is the HIGH-QUALITY food that *your dog* does best on. Don't buy into the "breed-specific food" crock. Or the "dental food" crock. It's just a marketing scheme. If you're getting him as a puppy, here would be some examples of good choices: * Merrick (any) * Canidae (any) * Innova puppy * Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul * Artemis Fresh-Mix small breed puppy * Wellness Just for Puppy === === Read the ingredients before you buy. Here is my "short list" of rules when I am looking at dog food ingredients: 1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!). Meal is simply the meat with the moisture removed. 2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes. 3) I don't want to see any byproducts. 4) I don't want to see a lot of fillers. 5) I don't want to see preservatives that are believed to be carcinogens (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin). 6) I don't want to see artificial colorings such as the Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes. 7) I don't want to see added sugars (sugar, corn syrup). 8) I don't want to see mystery meats (meats identified only as "meat" or "poultry".) Here is an article about byproducts: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=ingrd And an article on what ingredients to avoid: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients --- Here are some examples of GOOD dog foods: * Artemis * Blue Buffalo * California Natural * Canidae * Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul * Eagle Pack Holistic Selects * EVO * Fromm * Innova * Merrick * Nature's Variety * Orijen * Solid Gold * Taste of the Wild * Wellness * ZiwiPeak Or check this website; the 4, 5, or 6 star rated foods are all good foods. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ (For a puppy, it's better to stick in the 4 & 5 star range. The 6 star foods are very high in protein and are not well suited for puppies.) --- Higher quality food may seem more expensive at first, but it evens out. The higher quality the food, the less fillers eaten (and therefore the less poop comes out the other end). Your dog eats more of a low-quality food to try to get the nutrition it needs, and most of the food just passes right on through. Also, higher-quality food will make your animals healthier, so you save money on vet bills in the long run. --- What *NOT* to buy: Stay away from grocery stores brands. They are low-quality foods chalk full of fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc.. (Grocery store foods are those like Beneful, Old Roy, Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, etc.) Beware "premium" foods. "Premium" does not always mean good nutritionally, and is not a nutritionally high quality food. Most of these foods have the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Bil-Jac, Royal Canin, etc..) Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that's why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don't focus a lot on nutrition. It's not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told "this is good food", so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it's good as well. Hills company, the makers of Science Diet, are heavily involved in vet schools. "Hill's scientists author more than 50 research papers and textbook chapters each year and teach at leading schools of veterinary medicine" (Source of quoted section: http://www.hillsvet.com/zSkin_2/company_info/company_info_general.jsp?JSESSIONID=HMz2B3Jn3hv0rnSoxCobfbBhOec35ODG7yh5t3P0vcvhOtzRlQ9M!598359213!167846923!7005!8005&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302026072&bmUID=1196192566575 ) --- "Big box" petstores like Petco and Petsmart rarely have quality foods. (There are some higher quality foods at those locations, but most of the foods aren't.) * Blue Buffalo * Castor & Pollux * Eagle Pack Holistic Selects * Natural Balance * Solid Gold * Wellness Also, grocery stores and Walmart aren't good places to buy food either. Your best bets for getting quality dog food are: - small, locally owned petstores - dog boutiques - farm supply stores --- When switching foods, do it gradually. I do this over about a two week timespan: 25% food A, 75% food B 50% food A, 50% food B 75% food A, 25% food B 100% food A .

Does an Irish Wolfhound need the company of another dog? by Shar Q: Hiya, I really want an Irish wolfhound, he is 12weeks old right now. and to ensure he is happy in his, hopefully new home, I am wondering does he need another dog for company or are they content on being the only pet in the family?

A: Dogs are pack animals, and they will have much happier lives if they have another dog to play with. With that said, it is possible for a dog to have a decent quality of life alone as long as you spend tons of time each day interacting with him or her.

Can I take the dog-kennel company that I used to work at to court for unsanitation? by 29 Q: I know that the point of the company was to look after these dogs, but think they could have been a little more sanitary.......I used to work the night shift there and was made to sleep on a a bed that was dirty and smelled like urine. This was in a bedroom that was supposed to be there for human-use, but this was not always enforced. The sheets and blankets were not washed enough, and the mattress must have been covered with bacteria. What do you think?

A: You can always file a law suit but it would not benefit you in any way. You could not ask for damages because you could not prove that you were damaged by the conditions. So you would incur the costs of the suit, possibly have to defend yourself against a counter suit for harassment, simply to force the company to clean up for the next person who sleeps there. You would do better to report them to the local health department or whoever is in charge of inspecting businesses for compliance with laws.

If I were to start a dog saving company, what are some good names for the company? by purpleice Q: If I started a dog saving company, what are some potential company names? Like PuppyPlace? All of the names so far are great! Thanks!

A: Isn't it that if you register your dog before his 8th birthday or something, you can keep the insurance going..? The Kennel Club might do it, their dog insurance is very popular. Or you can use a comparison website? That is what I did. I hope this helps :)

Is it possible to find any Dog Walking company that could have/provide all financial statements? by Q: I am writing a project and I need to find a Dog Walking company that could have all financial statements such as balance sheet, cash flow, etc. I haven't found any company yet that could have such information online. Who could help me? Thank your for answers... sad to find out that it's impossible to get what i need :/

A: Most dog walking businesses are small enterprises that do not keep record that are that intense. They keep records of clients and payments but they are usually started by people who do not have a business degree and most never get so large that they need such intense records. Check the Internet for NYC dog walking. There are a few services there that have grown into substantial enterprises where you are talking about a business making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year but my guess? They are still run semi-formally because they do not need projections like many product and service businesses. They need to keep tax records and employee records. The little ones? You are lucky if they PAY taxes, let alone keep records.

How much $$ should the employee of a dog care company receive? by bellydonsah28 Q: I just started working as a pet sitter/dog walker for a pet care company and I am paid 45-50% of the total charge of each sit/walk. I have heard that 70-80% is the norm. Am I getting ripped off? Well, duh, Bonnie. That's why I'm trying to find out if I should be getting paid more- so I can decide to quit or not.

What Dog Moving Company can i use for USA to London? by woooooooiiiiiiiiii Q: Im moving from America to London later in the year, i know about pet passports and how to sort them out, but does anyone know a dog moving company, thats good, to bring my snoodle from USA to London?

A: I am often at the Ladyhaye Kennels in Surrey, and they are a pet travel agent. Not sure if they deal with it for you in the US but if you get stuck then email them and find out. http://www.petravelagent.com/

What is your opinion on animal testing at Iams dog food company? by GreenErin Q: The Iams brand dog food company abuses its animals that they test on. They through dogs on hard concrete floors and blind rabbits. Why must torture helpless animals? If you think its just propaganda tell me please. I would hate to falsely accuse someone and I dont really know if they breally do that or not but I am concerned for the poor animals. I am a vegan and I think that Greenpeace rules! If I am wrong please do not call me stupid or anything I am only 16.

A: I think it's disgusting. The fact is Iams could take care of the animals they test. I can understand wanting to test out food products, to make sure that the food s do what they claim, but Iams has been known to do such things as give healthy dogs gingivitis to test their dog foods, why not go to local shelters and find dogs who already had the ailment ? why not request owners with dogs of the specific ailments/issues whatever apply their dogs for clinicle trial of the food, and send them free food for the duration of the test i mean the worst it would do is not help the situation. and would cost iams a lot less in bording costs, and the animals could esily be monitored through a local vet. to the poster who said would u rather test on humans ? why would they test dog/cat food on humans? It would have no eefct on humans as it is formulated for animals .

Is it a good idea to adopt another dog so my current dog has company while I'm at work? by anj Q: I'd like to get him a playmate so he has company during the day while I'm at work. But I'm worried my dog will be jealous or they won't get along. He does go to the dog park. He doesn't do well with big dogs but small to medium dogs he likes to play with so I keep him in the small dog area. He's a dachshund btw.

A: One of the worst things you could do is adopt another dog for your dog. However, adopting another dog because YOU want another dog (and having that dog as a companion for your first dog as an advantage) is the right decision. If introduced properly and if they meet before you adopt the second dog, chances are you will find your dog is quite happy to share his home with a canine friend. However, be prepared to separate them with a crate during the day if things take a turn for the worst. Perhaps enrolling your current dog in a doggy daycare a few times a week would be a better idea? That way, you can see his general reaction to other dogs, find out if there are any specific personalities that he gets along with, and you won't have to worry about him not getting enough exercise while you're at work!

Is Peaceful Pawz a good in home dog obedience company? by Q: I am looking into in home dog obedience training for my 4 month old pit puppy and so far am most interested in Peaceful Pawz which is owned by Marianne Courey and located in Metro Detroit. I can't seem to find any reviews on her or her company and was hoping for a little help on here! The price is very reasonable (5 sessions/100$) but want to know if the training is worth it! Thanks!

A: For a puppy I would suggest that you GET OUT of the house and GO to a doggie obedience school. Why? Your dog needs to be exposed to new people, new places, and new dogs so that he or she can learn that they are all good things. If you want your dog to be calm and confident as an adult, you need to do training around a variety of things and make sure your dog has good experiences with those things as a puppy. And as far as finding a good obedience school- looking at review online is always good but I'd also suggest that you ask if you can drop by and watch a class (ideally the one you'll be taking) before you sign up. Then you can decide if it is the kind of place you want. If things are totally out of control and there are 40 dogs running around barking like mad- it might not be a place for you. If you get there and the trainer says 'we don't use treats because they are bribes!' and then alpha-rolls her dog- you might not want to train there either. Best way to find one you like is to just go and look and ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask the people how long they've been training or how they got interested in dogs.

Where can i get a custom printed dog shirt for a company dog? by Q: I need a red t shirt with our company logo on it for our company dog? where do i get this?

A: Cafe Press has dog tees that can be printed up with anything you want on them. The largest size they have fits my 65# female greyhound - that is their XXL. Nice tee shirts though!

What is the best dog to keep a Mini Dachshund company? by LudicrouSpeed Q: My Girlfriend and I just got a baby mini dachshund about 1 1/2 weeks ago. We love her, but she is making our lives very difficult at the moment. She HATES being left alone and is ripping up our carpet, whining and Barking. So heres my question - i have read in a few places that Doxies love company and other people with similarly troublesome doxies have solved the problem with getting a company dog so they are not alone when the owners are out. So im considering this to make our little baby happier and make our lives a bit easier. I have read that i should keep the single dog till she is toilet trained and then bring in the 2nd dog as this will make it easier. My question is, what dog would you recommend? I want something small, im considering another doxie, but id like something that will fetch balls and that i wont have to worry about back problems down the line, something a bit more athletic, but the most important thing is that the 2 will get along well and help each other behave.

A: A second dog is not the answer to your troubles. Your Dachshund is being a normal puppy -- puppies hate being left alone, they bark, whine, chew stuff and make mischief. Get a second puppy and you will get the same again and the result will be double the trouble. I like gaps between dogs to be at least a year apart. That way your first dog should be fully house trained, obedience trained and it should also have bonded to you. Something small and athletic? nothing fits the bill better than a Jack Russell Terrier. Boston Terriers would be a second best fit.

should i get another dog to keep my 12 yr old dog company? by MAS4 Q: I have a 12 yr old female husky/heeler mix. We lost our other dog a few months ago and she seems very lonely since his passing. She is very skiddish, house broken, great with kids, but seems lonely. What kind and what age should I be looking for in a dog to keep her company?

I have adopted another dog to keep my dog company. What behavior can expect? by Nettie B Q: I have adopted a 3 month old female cattle dog to keep my 18 month old male kelpie X company. Everything is going really well and the play all the time. However there have been times when there have been issues, usually around feeding time. The older one often does not allow the younger one near the food bowls. I have not intervened because I understand that they have to work it out for themselves but I am wondering under what circumstances do I step in. What behaviour is considered normal?

A: i had a similar situation the difference being that the second dog was brought in as a rescue.the rescue had food issues only because she was half starved and wasn't sure if each meal was her last, literally. things have since calmed down, but i still stay in the room while they eat and if one finishes before the other and the one who did not finish walks away i pick the dish up. i never let them eat out of one anothers dish. as far as interfering, there will be a time of adjustment while dominance is established, but you should not let it escalate into out and out fighting. if both your canine babies have been"fixed" it will make things go alot better as males seem to always want to dominate the females. they both need to understand that you are the "pack leader" and that you will set boundaries for them both. hope this helps you. it will take some work to establish boundaries and ground rules but since you cared enough to ask the question i'm sure you are up to it. good luck
