best Contemporary romance authors? by XS Q: i like danielle steel but her novels are about people who are 45 years 50 years etc.im looking for romance novels about younger people. there should not be boring details and it should not be chick lit.(i have a few authors i like when i want to read chick lit but im in the mood for some romance books) the stories should be very romantic and interesting.i tried susan elizabeth phillips (what i di for love) but it had too many boring details thank you i meant what i did for love.. sorry

A: Nora Roberts is a good romance writer. So is Catherine Asaro. I also gave you some links to some free romance books that are legal.

What is a good American Contemporary author? by Q: I need to find a good author for school so if anyone has any suggestions let me know thank you!

A: Cormac McCarthy, not sure of spelling, is the best writer of Contemporary American fiction I can think of bar none. His writing is so spare and beautiful it makes you just churn up inside. I stopped reading his books years ago because they were so bloody depressing, but after reading The Road (twice) recently, and yes it's a nightmare, I know I will be haunted by that book forever. I have no other words but he is brilliant. He makes everyone else look shallow and cheap and morally compromised and cliched and dull.

Which Non-American author have your read. I mean the contemporary authors. only people from USA answer this.? by As I am Q:

A: Erskine Childers, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,Bram Stoker, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens....etc.

Authors whose work focused on a psychological issue? by lavendertalks Q: I've got an assignment where I need to choose an author (Contemporary writer) whose literature was highly influenced / can be connected to a psychological issue. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

A: Read 'The Bell Jar' by Sylvia Plath. It's a semi-autobiographical novel based on her experiences with depression. Several of her poems also focus on this aspect of her life.

Why do people only expect black authors to write about black people? by Blue Eyed Christian Q: That is why I use a pen name. I hate it how someone would think that I only write about black people and our issues as though I am alienated from other races that are in the world? Its very insulting to hear someone say that. My African- American studies professor said that is the reason why he does not read works written by contemporary black authors. I found that to be offensive seeing as how not only am I black but I do write about other races.

A: I have absolutely no idea what skin colour most of the authors are whose books I read. I really don't care, either. I agree with you that it's insulting to think that fiction written by black people is somehow different from fiction writen by white people. One of my daughter's favourite books is Noughts and Crosses, and I thought it was great too. The author is black, and we're white.

Why doesn't God inspire contemporary authors to rewrite the Bible? by Jeff S Go Zags! Q: Why couldn't God have inspired Shakespeare or Hemmingway....or someone with some writing skills? who else thinks pages of "so and so begetting so and so" is a little on the dry side?

A: Or maybe he did inspire them, but their stories didn't make the cut by the church to actually make it INTO the Bible. ;) I'd be convinced of their writing being divine before I'd believe it of the over translated and changed bible.

What are some good, classic, novels by British authors? by yoyoyoyoyoman090 Q: These have to be books that I could write a research paper on.. Contemporary authors are fine, but please make them books of substance :) Thanks

A: North & South by: Elizabeth Gaskett (19th century author...or anything by her) A Cry of Stone (800+ pages) by: Michael D. O' Brien (20th century author of substantial literature)

What contemporary author has done the best job of advancing literature in our time? by Rev Phred Q: Please provide examples of the authors work (Titles only will do.) I can only think of two and I am attempting to "broaden my horizons." :D

A: Dulcinea has it right, I think. (And her name should tell you she knows her literature.) Among living authors, the magic realists have done the most to establish new ground for literature. Foremost among these are Gabriel Garcia Marquez, "1000 Years of Solitude" "Autumn of the Patriarch"; Salman Rushdie, "Midnight's Children" "Satanic Verses"; and Gunter Grass "The Tin Drum" "The Flounder." There are many many living are recently deceased authors worth reading who may or may not have "advanced" literature. Not every author believes literature to advance like science; some think while there are flows of fashion it matters little whether you participate. American authors worth knowing include Pynchon, "Gravity's Rainbow", Roth, the Zuckerman books; Morrison "Beloved"; Updike, the Rabbit books. And of course, in broadening your horizons, it doesn't do to forget the past. Read Tolstoy, Dickens, Melville, Cervantes, Austen, Eliot, Beckett, Conrad, Joyce, etc etc if you haven't yet.

what are some good black contemporary authors? by ckt_05_dani Q: name some of their books

A: Walker and Morrison, of course. I very much admire Gloria Naylor, partlcularly her books LINDEN HILLS and BALEY'S CAFE. I like a volume of poetry MY FATHER'S GEOGRAPHY by Baltimore poet Michael S. Weaver. And I love the poems of A. Van Jordan. Charles Johnson wrote a highly ironic book about the slave trade; it's named THE MIDDLE PASSAGE, Kia Cothrone is one of my favorite playwrights but I don't know if her plays have been published. SOME of Ernest Gaines work is very good. There are many more, but that's enough for right now, I guess.

Foreign Contemporary Fiction Authors? by megz Q: I'm taking a Contemporary World Fiction class in college and I need to find a good fiction (contemporary) novel by a non-american author. I usually read novels by American authors, so my knowledge of foreign authors is very limited and for some reason I can't find a list anywhere on Google of any Award winning novels outside of the US around the time I need. Any ideas would be great. I need something written between 1950 and 1970, the closer to the 50s it is the better. Doesn't have to be award winning, but translated to English is better. Thanks!

A: Check the list of Man Booker prize winners- I did a quick search and the winner for 1970 was Bernice Reubens for "The Elected Member". She is a Welsh author. The winner in 1969 was PH Newby for "Something to Answer For", an English author.

Who is your favorite author of contemporary fiction? by gotalife Q: I really like John Irving, Jonathan Carroll, Haruki Murakami, (to name just a few) but I'm trying to find some new contemporary fiction authors...any suggestions?

A: Can't just have one favorite- I too am a John Irving fan, and also like Margaret Atwood, Amy Tan, Wally Lamb (I wish he would write more books), and Jodi Picoult.

Where can I find historical book sale recordings for famous authors of all time? by papyrus Q: I'm interested in comparing the cumulative numbers for two very different, non-contemporary authors, say Paulo Coelho and Victor Hugo.

A: The Gutenberg Project has tens of thousands of books available for free download in pdf http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/main_page.... If, by chance, there is something you can't find there... then one of my English professors gave me this site, which is basically the same thing and was put together by the University of Pennsylvania: http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/lis... All copyrighted material is illegal to download. Here are some sites that have non-copywrited material for reading: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/bro... http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/ebooks/... http://www.thefreelibrary.com/ http://www.baen.com/library/ http://www.ebooks3.com/ http://www.hismercy.ca/content/hm_ebooks... http://www.bookyards.com/ http://www.redbirdstudio.com/e_books/... http://www.free-online-novels.com/... http://www.bibliomania.com/1/frameset.ht... http://www.starry.com/novel/authors.htm.... http://www.bygosh.com/features.htm... http://www.bygosh.com/thebestnovels.htm.... http://www.bookspot.com/ask/ http://www.bookspot.com/ But I would try the Gutenberg Project first. I think their collection is more extensive.

Who are your favorite contemporary horror authors? by Q:

A: My answer is probably gonna be lame and predictable, but I don't really read horror often and when I do, the only author I read is Stephen King. And old Stephen King...like Carrie, The Shining. Short stories. The new stuff is okay, but some of it's a little too detailed for me and I really don't touch it. Horror is best taken in smaller doses, I think.

Any suggestions for a British contemporary author? by Irish Percussionist at Heart Q: For my AP English summer project, I need to read a book by a contemporary British author. I'm in love with fantasy, and I'm open to any suggestion. Preferably, it should be from this site... http://www.contemporarywriters.com/authors/ and no J.K. Rowling, please.

A: terry pratchet

Where can I get a free download of novels\stories of contemporary writers? by debergeracvat Q: Most websites have books only from the middle ages. I'd like authors like Wole Soyinka, Nadine Gordimer. Project Gutenberg doesnt even have George Orwell. Copyrights are to blame, of course. But does anyone know where I can get more contemporary authors? Oh please don't bother to give me a lecture on copyrights.

A: I dont know about contemporary authors, but try your luck here.

What are some classic German authors who have been translated into English? by Alex Q: Who are the famous classic authors in Germany (the Charles Dickens/Mark Twain/etc.) who have had famous works translated into English? I am trying to learn more about the German culture (and eventually want to read these works in German). Also - I am just as interested in contemporary authors, books that have been translated into English and have been read by a lot of Germans - especially younger ones. Thanks!

A: Most German authors, especially the classics have been translated into English. Goethe, Schiller, Hesse, Storm, Kafka, Walser, Brecht, Böll, Grass...the list is endless. You can browse wiki for an overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_language_literature

Mr. Rothman's list of Contemporary American Authors? by Mel !! <3 Q: On a walk to remember, a "list" is mentioned. Mr. Rothman's list of contemporary author's. Apparently there's an American list and British list etc. I was wondering where I could find a copy of this list if it is in fact an actual list. Thank you in advance.

A: Can't find anything on it. You could always try contacting Sparks http://www.nicholassparks.com/ContactNicholas.html

Please recommend me good modern / contemporary fiction literature authors like a modern Kerouac maybe? by Fern Q:

A: Sadly, I have found no modern Kerouacs. At all. You might try reading his favorite writers though. Halper, Wolfe, and Saroyan, which Kerouac referred to as "The Trinity." Excellent question. I hope you find an answer.

Looking for contemporary authors/novels/short fiction/drama in the dark humor/black comedy genre? by Michael G Q: This question refers to a specific genre or tone of literature. I noticed that there is some confusion about this type of literature when I searched for similar questions/ answers here. I just want to read more stories of this nature and would welcome any lists or recommendations. Thanks.

A: I haven't read this book, but I did read the reviews and think this is something you might be interested in. The book is Light House by William Monahan. I had a copy that I sold (I sell on-line) and I decided to investigate a bit before mailing it. Check out the link for more info.

Can someone tell me where to go to ask and receive answers about Authors, romance, contemporary, fiction, etc? by [email protected] Q: I am trying to find out about authors with different a.k.a.'s, out of print books, what happened to? Is there a website for this info?

A: Romantic Times Book Review has a reader forum. You'll get answers to a lot of your questions there and they'll point you to other helpful sites, as well. I subscribe to their print magazine, which is fabulous.

Jane Hamilton Bobbie Ann Mason Barbara Kingsolver Anne Lamott Ann Patchett Jane Smiley Louise Erdrich Anne Tyler Anna Quindlen Cynthia Thayer Janet Fitch Melinda Haynes Julia Glass Mary Doria Russell Marge Piercy The following have been highly recommended by friends but I have not yet read them: Sara Gruen Marjane Satrapi Lisa See Anchee Min Amy Tan Anita Diamant Mmmm, gotta be more but I can't think of them right now. What are some good contemporary Japanese authors who have been translated into english? by good enough Q: l like Banana Yoshimoto & Haruki Murakami

A: A great book is "Out" by Natsuo Kirino. Described as "a masterpiece of literary suspense and pitch-black comedy of gender warfare..." Should be available at amazon or a barnes & noble. It is a bit darker than Yoshimoto and Murakami but a good read all the same!

What are some good novels by contemporary russian/ukraine authors? by Tigerlily86 Q:

A: The Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko are pretty good. Its considered an urban fantasy book, about the Light vs. Dark. It has vampires, shape shifters, and people with powers in the story. Its not what you would expect from my description (no Harry Potter), there is something purely Russian in the way that the people interact that make the stories unique. They also made two movies based on the books. : )

Name three of your favorite contemporary authors? by David Q: --and the first work of theirs you read. Mine: Michael Chabon (The Mysteries of Pittsburgh) Alain de Botton (The Architecture of Happiness) Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius)

A: Can I still consider Kurt Vonnegut contemporary? George Saunders (Civilwarland In Bad Decline) Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale) Will Self (The Quantity Theory of Insanity) Two authors I love who died recently are Janet Frame (2004) and Marguerite Duras (1996...well sort of recently.) They are both still in print, still read, still discussed, respected and relevant so I loosely consider them contemporary.

What authors, preferably contemporary, would you compare my writing style to? by Paranormal Kitty Q: Short example: http://suicideblues.deviantart.com/art/Click-140870102 Long example: http://suicideblues.deviantart.com/art/Rabbits-are-Roadkill-103895709 My novel is similar in style, but much darker and more disturbing.

A: Whoa....It's good, it's dark, and it's disturbing. Not something I would normally read, but you've done it wonderfully. I won't even say contemperary, Edger Allen Poe sounds close, though his writing was merely disturbing, not thought-provoking.

Can you recommend any contemporary French authors? by coco Q: I like Jean Echenoz and Marie Redonnet and am looking for more recommendations. Thanks!

A: Bernard-Henri Levy is a philosopher, not a fiction writer, but his books are quite fascinating to read -- for example, Le Testament de Dieu (published by Grasset). Hope this is helpful :-)

What are good sites to find literary criticism on Contemporary British authors? by Ami Q: For example Sebastian Barry or Martin Amis

What are some contemporary teen authors? by elle4 Q: i know of chirstopher paulini, but are there any others in the genre of fiction, thanxxx ...i mean, an author who is a teen, not an author for teens

A: If you're looking for authors that are still in their teens I'm not sure but if you're looking for authors that write teen fiction I would definitely recommend Chris Crutcher. He writes "realistic" fiction for teens and doesn't dumb it down. He's also not afraid to tell it like it is.

Where can I find a complete list of contemporary English authors? by Lovely Girl Q:

A: i think it should be helpfull:http://thinkexist.com/nationality/english_authors/

What contemporary authors are being overlooked? by Do You Trust Me? Q:

A: Overlooked as in..... not noticed that much? If that's the case, then I'd say Garth Nix is kind of an overlooked contemporary author. Don't know if you've heard of him. He's written many great books, fantasy, and mostly for teens. William Lavender. He's a brilliant historical fiction writer.

Any contemporary authors similar to Marion Zimmer Bradley? by harpkilian Q: I've read all the Darkover novels at least twice and would like to find someone new who writes in a similar vein. I've done the literature map thing and bookseer.com and recognize a few names, but none of them really fills the bill. Any suggestions?

A: You might enjoy Mercedes Lackey as well: strong female characters, action-driven plots, political intrigue, and a fair amount of romance and superpowers. The first in the Heralds of Valdemar series was "Arrows of the Queen," but I'd recommend the "Vows and Honor" miniseries with Tarma and Kethry above it. While I haven't read Andre Norton's Witch World series, both MZB and Lackey teamed up with her for "Tiger Burning Bright," which was a fun little one-shot in which three generations of royal ladies must save their city-state, and perhaps the world, from an empire. Norton may well be worth another look. Anne Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy is based around dangerous, crazy-powerful (and powerful-crazy) women and the men that love them. If you like Ages of Chaos Darkover, you'd probably like these. Anne McCaffery's Pern, Rowan, and "Freedom" series are another taste of sci-fi meets fantasy like the later parts of the Darkover time-line. David Eddings was my beginner's Tolkien growing up, featuring a ripping quest fantasy, great characters, and good world-building While I'd skip The Younger Gods series, the others are quite fun.

Contemporary poems by contemporary authors? by Beckers Q: I need to review at least a 10 line poem written within the past 30 years and give examples of literary devices. This was an easy assignment until it became contemporary. My original choice was she being Brand, clearly that is not recent though. Any suggestions for poems?

A: When is your birthday?

Who are some good contemporary and historical romance authors? by Dr. Bologna™ Q: My mom is an avid romance reader and loves to try out new authors all the time. For her birthday, I would like to try to find her a lot of books by a good author on ebay. I can check her shelf to make sure she doesn't already have the collection. But she likes to read the thicker novels. The ones that are like 300-400+ pages, so none of the harlequin series books. Of course I'm sure she wouldn't turn them away, but it isn't something she'd go out and buy. So that being said, she likes historical novels (her favorites are pirates and highlanders) but she also likes the contemporary ones. She likes to read some suspense ones like Linda Howard, but honestly I think she just prefers a good old lovey dovey angsty romance story. She already has a good collection of Johanna Lindsey, Lisa Kleypas, Stephenie Laurens (who she tells me that she hates?) Julie Garwood, and Christina Dodd. Do you have any favorites that you might suggest? Their best books would be helpful too. Thanks! Sudeep, Daphne duMaurier wrote gothic romances that are quite old I might add. She has several of those books however, and that is not what I'm looking for.

A: i personally read julie garwood, johanna lindsey and judith mcnaught. the highlander novels are the best! i also used to read amanda quick. she might like that. i suggest nora roberts, jude deveraux and, umm, carly phillips. for contemporary romance i suggest sophie kinsella. maybe she can go to her local bookstore and just browse thru the section, see what catches her eye. =)

where can i find free e-books featuring contemporary authors and titles? by mimose26 Q: there's this list of 1001 books that you gotta read before you die and i wanna work on it. i'm having trouble finding most of the titles in bookstores, so i'm resorting to e-books. oh, and if you have titles to recommend please share them! thanks a lot!

A: I would recommend Bookyards list of libraries that offer free ebooks for downloading. It is located at http://www.bookyards.com/links.html?category_id=1780 and they list over 550 online digital libraries

Need Contemporary novels by authors from different countries? by Q: For summer reading I need to find a CONTEMPORARY NOVEL by an author from either Europe, South and Central America, Africa, Asia, or Australia. I have looked on a lot of websites but cant seem to find much. Thanks for your time!

A: I'm not sure of your age group, but here are some. Boring old fogey disclaimer: They all have fairly controversial elements, so if you aren't of-age, please check with an adult as to their appropriateness for your age level. Good luck! Australia: "The Bone People" by Keri Hulme (about aboriginal peoples, unlikely companionship; includes some pretty brutal child abuse) India: "The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel (about a shipwreck survivor stranded on the sea with a surprise guest) South America: "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (the epic history of a family in a mythical town)

Is Stephen King one of your favorite contemporary authors? by Jake Sully Q: If yes, WHY? If not, why not (if you have read his books and still aren't his fan, that is)?

A: Lol, I love the pretentious losers calling King a hack with no real talent - he is every bit as good (if not better than those so called "Literary authors" except he tells stories where you actually care what happens - and hes done pretty well for himself by doing so. If you ever read "On writing" or "Danse Macabre" you will see how well educated in the field of literature he is, and he also has a damn good education from the school of life which is of value to any writer.

What are some good historical novels by contemporary authors? by Q:

Where can i read or download books by contemporary authors on the net? by nunu Q: Gutenberg has the classics and old works by the well known authors of yesteryear's and nothing to offer in terms of present day work. But is there any site where i can download or read new books?? Thanks in advance

A: Most authors don't because it cuts sales. Respect that. They need to make a living too. 90% of authors have to have another job to pay the bills. Less than 1% make tons of money like JK Rawling.

Does anyone know who the editor of Contemporary Authors is? by Lolly Pop Q: I'm looking for the editor of Contemporary Authors, New Revision Series, Volume 43. If you have it, please answer! (I'm writing a research paper, and I foolishly forgot to take note of the editor!)

What are you favorite contemporary authors and books? by Phil <3 Ligeia! Q: I've been too far immersed in pre-20th Century works this past year (with the exception of Kafka), but am interested in reading something contemporary to add to my reading queue. Currently I'm looking forward to reading Jonathan Coe's "The House of Sleep," Ismail Kadare's "The Three Arched Bridge," and " Ludmila Ulitskaya's "The Funeral Party." Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Please include why you liked the particular author and/or work. Thanks!

A: The Perks Of Being a Wallflower- Stephan Chbosky I loved this book :) It is amazing because the writing flows so well and everything it talks about is true and relevant to the world and it is just all around amazing. READ IT :)

Contemporary authors? by Chickadeee Q: Who would you say are our contemporary authors? Like modern ones? Would you go as far back as the 1920's or would you stick with just recent ones? Examples would be good :]

A: Since one of the meanings of contemporary is "belonging to the present time," I would say that I would include only those authors who are still alive (or were within the last few years) and writing today (or recently). Perhaps contemporary might include as much as the past twenty years, but I wouldn't think you could date it as far back as the 1920s or 30s. I'll list a few of the writers I would consider contemporary authors (though there are many, many more): -Rosamunde Pilcher (though she hasn't written anything since 2000) -Mary Higgins Clark -James Patterson -Janet Evanovich -Anthony Horowitz -Meg Cabot -Stephenie Meyer -Vince Flynn -Jasper Fforde -Stephanie Barron -Nora Roberts -John Grisham -Michael Crichton -Ann Brashares -Libba Bray -Neil Gaiman -Dean Koontz -Stephen King -Cormac McCarthy -Ian McEwan This site http://www.contemporarywriters.com/authors/ has a list of those authors they consider contemporary. Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_writers_in_Who%27s_Who_in_Contemporary_Women%27s_Writing has a list of contemporary woman writers. I hope this helps.
