Are widespread conspiracy theories the result of more information? by THE EVIL PENGUIN Q: There have always been conspiracy theories, such as the cult of Bacchus engaging in treason against the Romans, and Christians burning down Rome. But are conspiracy theories more common and more acceptable in the age of information traveling at the speed of light? If that is the case, why? We have tons of information at our fingertips, so wouldn't accurate information be more accessible? Thanks.

A: No, it is the result of easily disseminated information.

What are some differences between conspiracy theories and urban legends? by R B Q: I can think of a lot of similarities. I want to teach a short class about conspiracy theories, so try to be serious.

A: There's quite a few differences. Conspiracy theories are generally large, over-reaching conspiracies to try to cover up a secret, or get something done (sinister or not). JFK is the most well-known series of conspiracies, along with 9/11 conspiracies, Illuminati, the Freemasons and other secret societies. Urban legends are small, and have a much smaller impact. No one knows where they came from, as they generally happen to "a friend of a friend," or "one time X happened." They also vary greatly in detail. A popular urban legend in my area is that a homocidal maniac escaped an insane asylum in a bunny suit (it was Halloween, so no one thought anything of a man in a bunny suit). He then axed some people to death, or hung them off of a bridge. A less deadly example would be Bigfoot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_legend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_theory

How many Christians vs Atheists find any conspiracy theories plausible? by INFINITY Q: You would be a fool to think any theory from a given topic is untrue because of the subject, but like scientific theories, many conspiracy theories are not plausible. So, I just want to see the train of thought of the the religious vs the non religious.

A: You have asked an exceptionally excellent question. Really. But that's because it's a question that I've invested some effort into investigating. I've looked at critical thinking skills and compared them to a person's susceptibility to believe in conspiracy theories of all varieties, and compared that with demographic data. My results aren't ready to publish yet, and the project has been on a back burner for a while, however I can tell you this: There is no correlation at all between religiosity and a person's acceptance or rejection of certain conspiracy theories, with one major exception: non-religious people are (logically) much more likely to accept religious-based conspiracy theories like "the Catholic church is hiding evidence of [something specific]" or "Jesus didn't exist." I can't go into more detail, at least not yet. But I think it's an interesting subject and an excellent question.

What are the biggest right wing conspiracy theories and what are the biggest left wing conspiracy theories? by Fizzy Bubbler resurrected! Q: Right wing: > Global warming conspiracy > Obama is a Muslim theory Left wing: > Bush responsible for 9/11 What else? And who has the better conspiracy theories?

A: Right Wing: 1.(From the 1950s)Communists are poisoning our fluoride 2.The EU is planning world domination 3.The Protocols of the Elders of Zion Left Wing: 1.John F. Kennedy wasn't assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald 2.October Surprise 3.AIDS was created by the government so as to eliminate the black and gay population 4.HAARP is being used to create earthquakes, tsunamis, and other disasters 5.Pope John Paul I was assassinated by conservatives 6.Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by conservatives 7.John Lennon was assassinated by conservatives 8.Zionists are plotting world domination 9.The Protocols of the Elders of Zion 10.During the 1980s,the CIA smuggled cocaine into poor black cities in an attempt to destroy the black population

What do you think about people who believe conspiracy theories? by Trevor Q: Doing research for a website about conspiracy theories. What's your opinion of people who believe conspiracy theories and why do you think that? Please see my other questions for more conspiracy theory stuff. Thanks.

A: a conspiracy theory is only that if you have no proof... I would have to know what conspiracies you are referring too.. for example.. Bigfoot is a legend and as such has an air of conspiracy by those that want it to be recognized.. 9/11 .. something isn't right with the official story.. sorry.. and there is a lot more evidence that supports a conspiracy then the evidence supporting what we've all been told ( science and physical evidence ) so it depends on what you deem a conspiracy. Again it's very easy for me to say anything is a conspiracy ...your existence for example.. if I say you don't exist and you say you do and then I say you are a "conspiracy nut" the group think will kick in and you will be then on the defensive.. that doesn't mean you don't exist obviously ... it just means that popular opinion is fickle and can be a major obstacle to ultimate truth...

What are your opinions on conspiracy theories about the end times? by Q: There are many people who like to get into conspiracy theories about the end times. Such as the New World Order conspiracy theory, that there's going to be one big world government headed by the antiChrist. What are your opinions about such conspiracy theories? I personally don't care for them. Our Lord warned His apostles, and thus we ourselves, that we shouldn't get into such speculation. I know what the ending is going to be like. God is going to win in the end. I'm only going to worry about myself and the salvation of my one and only soul.

A: No theories. It's a Biblical FACT(Revelation 1:7). Seventh-day Adventist Christians preach the everlasting Gospel and keep the Biblical Sabbath(Saturday) day Holy(Exodus 20:8-11)."Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it Holy." The Sabbath begins sundown Friday and ends sundown Saturday." Sabbath School begin at 9:30am. Worship begin at 11:00am every Saturday. God's true Church believes that Jesus is God. God's true Church believes in the Trinity. God's true Church believes in the death of Christ on the Cross. God's true Church will uphold the Moral Law(Ten Commandments) God's true Church will Baptize by Immersion not Sprinkling. God's true Church will not eat Unclean Foods(Pork, Catfish, etc.) God's true Church will be a Worldwide Church preaching the message of Christ. God's true Church will teach Biblical literal six day Creation. NO Evolution. God's true Church will have the gift of Prophecy. God's true Church will preach Salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. God's true Church will stand against Sexual Immorality. Homosexuality, Adultery and Fornication are Sins. God's true Church will preach against Strong drink. Alcohol is not allowed. (Proverbs 20:1). Remember God's true last day Church will not be a popular Church. Most people will attack God's Biblical Church with vigilance. Satan himself will attack God's Church(Revelation 14:12) Truth crushed to the ground will always rise to the top.

What government conspiracy theories do you believe to be true? by bluenaketat Q: I have just been researching some of the theories, like area 51, 9/11, federal reserve, planet x. I am still debating on what i believe and don't believe, trying to differentiate what is fact and what is fiction. What conspiracy do you believe and why and what is your political affiliation?

A: The Federal Reserve is messed up. I don't have to believe in any "conspiracy theory" for that. Our money system is a system of self generating inextinguishable debt. This is a fact not fiction or a theory. I "believe" there is a link between it and The Kennedy assassination. He was about to abolish it via executive order before they wasted him.

Conspiracy theories? by Right in ya face! Q: Hi you, I like conspiracy theories, Can you tell me examples of subliminal messages, and hidden hints? Can you tell me stories when the TV lies, where do you think a conspiracy is going on?

A: One TV example is when you are watching a movie and the main character is obviously drinking either a Pepsi or a Coke. You know then, that the rest of the movie you would not see a drink of the other brand. This is supposed to have an effect on people, although I don't know how much it really does. In Disney movies there are supposed to be sexual references, such as in the Little Mermaid there was a time when bubbles kicked up spelled SEX. I think there was another reference in Aladdin, but I don't remember what it was. Reality TV shows are usually not exactly what they show. For example, I think it was uncovered that contestants in The Amazing Race were often slowed down by their camera men, causing the results to be skewed based on how well your camera man could keep up. A more subtle example is generally journalists and news reporters have the ability to easily slant stories in the way they want. I know from first-hand experience because I was a classmate of Gina Glocksen's (from this year's American Idol) and I was interviewed for a newspaper. The questions asked were things like, "How shocked are you to see Gina in the spotlight?" and "Did you think Gina was always going to be a star?" When I had honest responses like, "No, it doesn't surprise me, she's worked really hard to get where she is." that got mysteriously left out, but when I added, "It is still really exiciting to see her on TV." that got put in. Basically, this specific journalist took the parts of my interview that would prove his point, and left out anything that would contradict the shock value of the story.

Conspiracy Theories? by niksie19 Q: Does anyone have any good conspiracy theories? Marylin Monroe, Bobby Kennedy, JFK, area 51, loch ness monster, 911, anything?

A: Mark Twain supposedly once said that "to keep a secret between three people, two of them have to be dead" Works for me.

conspiracy theories? by 12345 Q: has anyone read a good book on conspiracy theories??

A: This one (see below, please) is quite good, although it deals with a specific incident rather than conspiracy theories in general: Debunking 9/11 Myths: Why Conspiracy Theories Can't Stand Up to the Facts (Paperback) So many people love conspiracies - mainly, I think, because such theories satisfy a need to have puzzling, traumatic events explained. But, given human fallibility, there have been very few actually successful major conspiracies in the annals of history. Usually, incidents are the result of human error, miscalculation or downright stupidity rathen than of any vast conspiracy. See the second link for a good review of the book. Here's an excerpt: "Debunking 9/11 Myths is an absolutely devastating, comprehensive and fully documented refutation of conspiracy theories which argue that the World Trade Center towers were brought down by controlled demolition, that something other than a Boeing 757 smashed into the Pentagon, and that United Airlines Flight 93 was either shot down by the American military or never crashed at all." Link number 3 will connect you to an interesting article about the "Da Vinci" conspiracy
