What are my chances of getting a nomination? by Q: I want to attend the Air Force Academy so what are my chances with this letter, Dear Senator, I am writing this letter to request your nomination to the United States Air Force Academy for the class entering June 2012. I am currently a Junior at Armwood High School in Sefner, FL and have desired to serve my country as a member of the Armed Forces since I was in 8th Grade. This desire stems from the strong influence I have had from my family. My mother is currently a Master Sergeant in the Air Force, my father is a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant, and my brothers are both Marines. Serving in the Armed Forces is a proud family tradition that I wish to carry on as a commissioned officer in the Air Force and I believe that path begins at the Air Force Academy. In my JROTC class I have participated in many activities including: Drill Team, Raiders (Physical Training Competitions), Rifle Exhibition, Color Guard, and Honor Guard. Within these teams I have demonstrated great discipline, teamwork, and leadership. This year I am Co-captain of the Exhibition team and will become the captain of both the Exhibition and Drill Team during my Senior year. I have participated in 3 Drill Team competitions and achieved 1st place in Armed Platoon and Unarmed Squad at District level. During my Sophomore year, I was awarded the Military Excellence Award for having demonstrated exceptional potential for military leadership and during my Freshmen year, I was awarded the Superior Cadet ribbon. I have also obtained over 30 hours of community service mostly from a service learning project to spread physical health awareness. Aside from my extracurricular activities, I also maintain a good academic record. I have taken 3 AP classes and 2 years of Spanish. I have also taken 4 years of AVID (college preparation class) since middle school. I have maintained a 4.2 weighted GPA this year so far. As a junior, I have already managed to take 4 years of high school mathematics and I am currently working on AP Calculus in my 5th year. I have always felt that performing well academically shows ones conviction and dedication to excellence. That search for excellence extends well beyond the classroom and the drill field and into every aspect of my life. I believe that I am a strong candidate for nomination and look forward to meeting with you in person to prove my worth. I sincerely appreciate the time you have taken out of your busy schedule and hope that you consider me as one of your nominees for the USAFA class of 2012. Sincerely, my name

A: Rewrite last paragraph. Be more asscertive. Be direct and not a pushover. Summarize. I want to carry on my family tradition of military of service as an Officer in the Air Force. I have enjoyed and excelled while participaing in JROTC and want to make the military a career. I believe with my dedication and strong academic foundation I would be a strong candidate for your consideration. Something to that effect. Good luck.

A few Questions on West Point Admissions? by Q: I would really appreciate it if anyone had some information on West Point... I have been considering going there for several months now, but I have a few questions pertaining to admissions. Initially, I am a high school Junior and I was wondering when I should begin my precandidate questionnaire. I have heard both spring and winter from various WP flyers. Also, what kind of questions are asked on the precandidate questionnaire? Are they asking for a resume? (The reason I ask this is I am expecting several awards in the summer of 2012, so will I have to give them my current/slightly inferior resume? Also, I haven't taken the SAT or ACT tests yet, do I need to complete those first?) Next question is when do you need to complete the Candidate fitness assessment? Is the bulk of the application process before your Junior year is over, or should I still be working on the CFA into the beginning of my senior year? Additionally, I have a friend interested in the academy as well. He is in my year, but I don't think that he has a shot at attending the academy: he is relatively smart (plus, he has a lot of community service), but he is very in-athletic and overweight. Should I discourage him from applying, or is it possible for someone (I think) 75-100 pounds overweight to become fit enough in time for the CFA? Finally, how difficult is it to get a nomination if you live in a rural state? Is it more likely that one could get nominated in such a state verses a highly populated one? Also, when applying for congressional nominations, if you had two residencies in two congressional districts, could you request a nomination from both congressmen? Thanks much for your time! I just realized how long this question was. Please don't feel obligated that you have to answer all of it... any information would be great.

A: 1. You have time to fill out the questionnaire. This is simply a mechanism for the school to have your contact information. They will not be using the questionnaire for admission purposes. Besides, you’ll have the opportunity to update the application. I would definitely take the SAT or ACT. This will be a very good signal if you’re competitive for applying. 2. I remember doing my CFA at the beginning of my senior year. This is something that you’ll be told about by your local admissions representative. I would start preparing for the test this summer. I’d dedicate 30 minutes to 1 hour practicing the events every day. You’ll score noticeable better through preparation. 3. I wouldn’t worry about your friend’s competitiveness. I definitely wouldn’t discourage him from applying. He might have his own personal plan to shed the pounds this summer. In the end, you should work as a team through the application - the better candidate will be selected. 4. Getting a nomination is very difficult. It’s almost impossible to answer the question of which is harder to get. If you had to choose between congressional districts, I would personally call both representatives and find out how many applicants they had from both districts. In the end, I would apply to the district that was less competitive.

The OSCAR nominee list are in!!? by (banned username) Q: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/82nd_Academy_Awards#Nominees_and_winners Though I'm really disappointed by the nominees. I can't believe that Stanley Tucci made the cut for best supporting actor nominee considering that Lovely Bones got lukewarm reviews by critics and same to Peneleope Cruz of Nine for best supporting actress, I mean, how did she get there? And I was in shock that 2012 was not nominated for best visual effects, like SERIOUSLY?!?! and probably the reason was 2012 is a bad movie and shouldn't deserve a nomination. But how come Stanley Tucci and Penelope Cruz was nominated but Lovely Bones and Nine also got bad reviews!? I'm so disappointed..i want reasons :)

A: I'm happy for Jeremy Renner he finally got nominated, his performence was gr8 in the hurt locker. And as for Stanley Tucci and Penelope Cruz they did a solid acting. It doesn't matter if the movie got bad reviews. And c'mon 2012 was a joke.

2012 Oscar Snubs, what do you think? by Q: What do you think should have gotten nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. I think that Michael Parks should have gotten one for Red State, do you think so? What do you think should have gotten one?

A: For best picture... Harry Potter & Drive. For best male actor Michael Fassbender for Shame. For best original screenplay 50/50.
